Philadelphia 76ers crumble against Utah Jazz 93-85 in Salt Lake City finale

Despite leading by 10 at halftime, the Philadelphia 76ers lost to the Utah Jazz 93-85 as Utah guard Keyonte George’s eruption paved the way for a Utah win in the NBA Summer League.

With last night’s loss the 76ers wrapped up their Salt Lake City Summer League schedule and will now focus on the stage in Las Vegas.

Jared McCain hits Summer League low

Following a passable performance against the Memphis Grizzlies, 76ers rookie Jared McCain strung together undoubtedly his worst outing of the Summer League, dropping a putrid 2 points and 4 rebounds on 1-9 shooting from the field.

McCain developed a severe case of tunnel vision during his on-ball reps. He had a good amount of opportunities as a pick-and-roll ball-handler and he forced a plethora of misfired inside shots against Walker Kessler’s drop coverage.

McCain couldn’t connect on the few spot-up chances that were presented to him and it felt like every time he got the ball, he forced a contested shot rather than reading the floor. He also struggled containing the ball as he was either out of position or fell victim to a blow-by.

76ers’ Ricky Council went on another heater

After a forgettable game vs. Memphis, Ricky Council IV returned to form against the Jazz, dropping 20 points on 6-11 field shooting and 2-4 shooting from beyond the arc.

Like Jared McCain, Council struggled against Walker Kessler’s interior defense early on but quickly caught fire in the open-floor where he drilled two-spot up threes from the wing while delivering more than a few electric finishes in the second quarter.

Ricky Council IV also found success gaining a full head of steam and line-driving to the rim, shredding defenders and easily drawing contact (6-7 from the foul line) as he attempted to will the 76ers to victory in the final frame.

76ers’ Jeff Dowtin dominated the Salt Lake City

In three games in the Salt Lake City Summer League, guard Jeff Dowtin record at least 15 points and 4 assists in each contest. Dowtin contributed 18 points and 6 assists on 8-13 field shooting against the Jazz tonight.

The guard impressed with his witty skills in the pick-and-roll, where he’s routinely punished Summer League defenses. Dowtin’s ability to create for others via his gravity off the screen or score off a floater/pull-up made him a challenge to contain for opposing teams.

Jeff Dowtin is making a dark horse case for a roster spot.

He played 12 games in Philadelphia last season after being a two-way addition, who was given a standard NBA contract for the duration of the 2023-2024 season.

Philadelphia will take on the Detroit Pistons at 7:00 p.m EST on Friday in their first Summer League game in Las Vegas.
