Congratulations to Layla, the Clearwater Threshers bat dog who announced her retirement Friday night against Fort Myers
While the Philadelphia Phillies blew Friday night’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the ninth inning, Layla The Bat Dog retrieved her final bat of her career down in Clearwater, Florida for the Threshers.
Layla, a 13-year old white Labrador Retriever, has spent the past six years picking up bats for the Clearwater Threshers. She picked up a bat for the final time during Friday night’s game against Fort Myers.
Layla’s last bat retrieval on Friday night
Layla became a social media start in 2018 when a video went viral showing her owner, Andrew Davis requesting a beer from the refrigerator. She then jumped on off the couch, opened the fridge door with the help of a towel placed on the handle, grabbed a cold one to Davis before returning to shut the door.
Davis showed the video Dominic Repper, who manages promotions and in-game entertainment at Threshers game, and just like that, she had a new job as a bat girl in Clearwater – a position she honorably served over the past six years.
