Phillies deal two pitching prospects to the Los Angeles Angels in return for All-Star closer Carlos Estévez

Last night, the Philadelphia Phillies acquired former All-Star closer Carlos Estévez from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for two pitching prospects, righty George Klassen and lefty Samuel Aldegheri.

Carlos Estévez performed well with the Angels, posting a 2.38 ERA and 20 saves this season. He struck out 32 batters and only walked five in 34 innings.

Since May 28, Estévez has not allowed a run in 18 consecutive appearances, giving up only five baserunners in 18 innings. Over his last 18 appearances dating back to May 28, Estévez has allowed just five baserunners over 18 innings. His 4 percent walk rate is tied with new teammate Matt Strahm for the 11th-lowest among qualified relievers.

Estévez has thrown 59.6 percent of his pitches in the strike zone, which is the fifth-highest zone rate among 464 pitchers who have thrown at least 300 pitches.

Carlos Estévez on being traded to a contender:

Carlos Estévez 2024 MLB Season:

  • 2.38 ERA | 20 saves
  • 34.0 IP | 20 H | 32 SO | 5 BB | 0.735 WHIP | 1.7 WAR

I know there’s a lot of concern acquiring Estévez for two pitching prospects when he’s set to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season but if you read The Liberty Line, you know damn well that our belief is that no prospect is untouchable.

Dombrowski realizes that the Phillies are in win-now mode and a World Series this season is within reach. Estévez pounds the strike zone and is a bonafide closer – something that the Phillies have managed by committee over the past two seasons.

Sure, George Klassen (1.97 ERA) and Samuel Aldegheri (109 K, 78 IP) were set to make significant leaps in the MLB Top 100 Prospects re-ranking but neither were going to help the major league ball club this season – making them expendable.

Up Next for the Phillies:

The Philadelphia Phillies got back in the win column last night with a dominant 8-0 over the Cleveland Guardians at Citizens Bank Park.

At the plate, Bryce Harper, Brandon Marsh, Kyle Schwarber and Nick Castellanos all hit homers to give their rookie pitcher Tyler Phillips plenty of run support – not like he needed it.

The South Jersey native and lifelong Phillies fan tossed a four-hit, complete game shutout to improve to 3-0 on the season. Phillips allowed four hits on 105 pitches (71 strikes) in nine scoreless innings. He struck out four and walked one.

With Ranger Suarez heading to the injured list, the Phillies will send Kolby Allard to the mound today at 1:35PM looking for a series win over Guardians pitcher Joey Cantillo.
