Hot Mic: Bryce Harper’s single-world reaction summarized the Phillies recent struggles perfectly
Bryce Harper and the Philadelphia Phillies are struggling to survive the Dog Days of Summer and just wrapped up their fourth series loss in a row, dropping 2-of-3 against the Cleveland Guardians over the weekend at Citizens Bank Park.
With one out and Kyle Schwarber at first base in the bottom of the seventh inning on Sunday, Harper stepped up to the plate with the Phillies down 4-3 to the Guardians.
Hunter Gaddis was on the mound and attacked the strike zone, throwing a fastball down the center of the plate which Harper fouled off into the stands.
Knowing he missed the perfect opportunity to induce “Bedlam at the Bank”, Harper’s reaction was picked up on a hot mic – showing how frustrating he and the Phillies recent stretch of games has been.
Bryce Harper Hot Mic:
While it’s hard to say that Bryce Harper is currently in a slump when he’s posted a .800 OPS during that 12-game stretch, he’s hitting just .200 with four homers and nine RBI – not exactly what you’d expect from a player in the MVP conversation on a team that still holds the best record in Major League Baseball.
As the trade deadline looms, the Phillies are laboring through the end of July. They are 3-7 over their last 10 games and have lost four straight series to the Athletics, Pirates, Twins, and Guardians.
They have lost 8-of-12 games since they swept the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 9-11.
Still, the Phillies hold the best record in Major League Baseball, leading the Cleveland Guardians by two games and the Orioles and Dodgers by three. In the National League East, the Phillies are holding onto a 8.5 game lead over the Atlanta Braves – who are 4-6 over their last 10 games.
Outside of the Dodgers, Brewers, and Padres any team that you could consider a “contender” has struggled during the ‘Dog Days’. Just look at these numbers over their last 10 games.
American League Contenders Last 10 Games:
- Baltimore Orioles: 5-5
- New York Yankees: 4-6
- Boston Red Sox: 3-7
- Cleveland Guardians: 5-5
- Minnesota Twins: 5-5
- Kansas City Royals: 5-5
- Houston Astros: 5-5
- Seattle Mariners: 4-6
National League Contenders Last 10 Games:
- Philadelphia Phillies: 3-7
- Atlanta Braves: 4-6
- Milwaukee Brewers: 6-4
- St. Louis Cardinals: 4-6
- Los Angeles Dodgers: 7-3
- San Diego Padres: 7-3
Point being, there’s no reason to panic about the recent slump that the Phillies have encountered over the past 2-3 weeks. That doesn’t mean however, that John Middleton and Dave Dombrowski should stand idle ahead of the tomorrow’s MLB Trade Deadline but I wouldn’t be surprised if they go against my best judgement.
Bryce Harper on Phillies recent slump:
When you have a lineup that features Bryce Harper, Trea Turner, Kyle Schwarber, Nick Castellanos, JT Realmuto and even Alec Bohm, adding another bat ahead of tomorrow’s 6pm deadline might not seem necessary given the talent that’s already here and taking up 6-of-9 spots in the lineup.
More on that below…
The Phillies would be foolish to stand idle ahead of tomorrow’s MLB Trade Deadline
