WATCH: Baseball Gods save Brandon Marsh and the Phillies in the 7th inning of yesterday’s 6-0 win over the Mariners
Brandon Marsh literally had no clue how he caught a fly ball on the warning track in right-center field during the Phillies 6-0 win over the Seattle Mariners yesterday.
With the Phillies leading 1-0 and Zack Wheeler in the midst of pitching an absolute masterclass on the mound, Mariners’ second baseman Jorge Polanco crushed a baseball deep into the sunny sky at T-Mobile Park.
Brandon Marsh immediately tracked the ball but lost it as it crossed over the path of the sun in the sky above. Blessed by the baseball gods, he stuck his glove out, indicating that he lost it in the sun but somehow, some way, it landed directly into his glove – a key first out in the inning of a one-run game.
Brandon Marsh blessed by Baseball Gods:
Marsh recorded the out and the following inning, Bryson Stott, Bryce Harper, and Alec Bohm each hit home runs in the eighth inning to change the tides – hopefully marking an end to a rough stretch of baseball for the Fightins.
No need to sugarcoat it, the Phillies have been in the midst of a ridiculous slump.
They entered yesterday losers of 13 out of their last 17 games. Before yesterday’s win, the Phillies lost six straight games and hadn’t won a series since they completed the sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 11th.
Needless to say, avoiding a sweep after getting swept at home by the New York Yankees before starting a rough west cast roadtrip could be the turning point for a forgettable month of baseball for the Phillies.
The Phillies, while playing their worst form of baseball imaginable over the past month, improved to 66-45 on the season. They hold a six game lead over the Atlanta Braves in the NL East.
In the National League, they hold a 1.5 game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers and trail the Cleveland Guardians by one game for the best record in all of Major League Baseball.
Tonight, Aaron Nola will take the mound against the Dodgers in LA – looking to take yesterday’s win as a “reset” to what has been a forgettable stretch of Phillies baseball.
