Roster Moves: Eagles sign former Broncos safety

A former Broncos safety (not named Justin Simmons) is coming to Philly.

Per multiple reports, the Eagles have signed safety Caden Sterns. In a corresponding move, the team waived LB Shaq Quarterman.

Sterns, 24, was waived by the Broncos last week due to injury concerns but was claimed by Carolina on waivers the next day. The Panthers waived Sterns after he failed a physical.

The former fifth-round pick has shown potential when healthy. Across the 2021 and 2022 seasons, Sterns recorded four interceptions and nine pass breakups. Although he only played five games in 2022, Sterns allowed just 29% of passes to be completed when targeted by opposing quarterbacks.

Talent has never been the concern with Sterns; it’s his availability. Factor in the torn patella tendon that cut his season short last year, and this signing is certainly risky.

Sterns is familiar with the coaching staff in Philadelphia, having played under new DC Vic Fangio and DBs coach Christian Parker in Denver.

“Yeah, he was a good player,” Fangio said of Sterns on Sunday. “He moved well, had good instincts and a good feel for the game. We just need to see where he’s at physically.

He’s only played five games in the last two years I believe. I don’t believe you’ll see him out here on the practice field at least for a week or so.”

The Eagles needed more depth at the position, given the current state of their safeties. Sydney Brown is working his way back from a torn ACL, Mekhi Gardner is nursing a hamstring injury, and C.J. Gardner-Johnson has missed the last few practices with a shoulder issue.

If Sterns can stay on the field, he should compete for a roster spot.
