Seattle Mariners fire manager Scott Servais as they continue to collapse post All-Star break

The Seattle Mariners are set to part ways with manager Scott Servais and appoint Dan Wilson, the team’s former starting catcher in the 1990s, as his replacement, according to The Athletic.

Mariners expected to fire Scott Servais

Scott Servais and Seattle fans have watched the Mariners’ 10-game lead in the AL West on June 18 completely evaporate as they now trail the Houston Astros by five games in the division. They are 7.5 games out of the third and final Wild Card spot in the American League.

The Mariners were 13 games over .500 when they had their biggest division lead and now have falled way back to 64-64 on the season, posting a miserable 20-33 since their largest lead in the divison. They are currently heading back to Seattle after a 1-8 road trip to face a surging San Francisco Giants ball club on Friday.

Seattle’s pitchers have performed well, posting a 3.53 ERA and holding opponents’ batting averages to .224. The offense just hasn’t produced. They rank last in the league in both average (.216) and hits (903), and while leading the MLB in strikeouts (1,308).

Scott Servais took over as the Mariners manager in 2016 and has a 680-642 record (.514 percentage). He took the Mariners to the postseason in 2022 which ended 21-year playoff drought in Seattle. They were promptly swept by the Houston Astros in the ALDS that season.

As for his replacement, Dan Wilson was a member of the Mariners from 1994-2005 and is one of the biggest names in the history of Seattle’s franchise, joining Ken Griffey Jr., Randy Johnson, Alex Rodriguez and Jay Buhner. He has never managed at any level of professional baseball and has never been a member of any MLB coaching staff.
