Eagles James Bradberry

Eagles’ James Bradberry listed as potential big-name cut candidate entering 2024 regular season

As the Philadelphia Eagles wrap up their final preseason game of the year, Howie Roseman and the front office are hard at work finalizing their 53-man roster for the 2024 season.

As it stands, the starters are all set in stone for the most part. The questions lie with the backups and third stringers, and at this point, that’s where veteran defensive back James Bradberry finds himself.

Coming off a terrible 2023 campaign, it’s kind of shocking that Bradberry is still on the roster. After the team drafted two defensive backs with their first two picks in this year’s NFL Draft, along with signing CJ Gardner-Johnson to a long-term deal, Bradberry felt like the odd-man out. But alas, he’s made it through all of training camp in Philly.

Nevertheless, we still have final cutdown day. That’s where CBS NFL analyst Cody Benjamin believes Bradberry could finally get cut loose.

Benjamin on why the Eagles may cut Bradberry before regular season

Two years removed from an All-Pro showing as a perimeter cover man for a Super Bowl contender, Bradberry has been trying a transition to safety after the Eagles crowded their cornerback spot with new, young talent. Philadelphia wouldn’t save anything by bidding farewell, but the aging veteran may prefer one final shot at an outside corner job in another city, and the Eagles have rookies they want to debut.

Benjamin listed Arizona, Washington, and Las Vegas as potential landing spots for Bradberry if he gets moved.

Personally, I think getting rid of Bradberry is a no-brainer. Howie mad a rare mistake by resigning Bradberry last offseason — it happens to the best of us. But what separates Howie from most GMs is that he’s willing to cut his losses, even after he hands a big contract out.

Like Benjamin writes, the Eagles won’t save any money by releasing Bradberry, but he simply serves no purpose here anymore. He’s had a pretty disappointing preseason; missing tackles like we saw last season and just not making a significant impact.

I can’t watch this again for another season

Although I want Bradberry on the next bus out of here, it’s uncertain if the organization feels the same way. I mean, they’ve kept him through the entire offseason, forgoing opportunities to trade him during free agency and the draft.

On top of that, Bradberry was a healthy scratch for the final preseason game against Minnesota. Typically, this only happens for players who are locks to make the roster. Or… for players whom the team is trying to trade.

We’ll find out what the Eagles plan to do soon enough.
