Anthony Edwards Michael Jordan

Isiah Thomas, Magic Johnson respond to Anthony Edwards saying that Michael Jordan was the only NBA player with skill back in the day

Last week, Anthony Edwards caught some attention after he made a claim that no NBA players back in the day had any skill outside of Michael Jordan.

Anthony Edwards: Only Michael Jordan had skill ‘back in the day’

“I didn’t watch it back in the day so I can’t speak on it. They say it was tougher back then than it is now, but I don’t think anybody had skill back then. [Michael Jordan] was the only one that really had skill, you know what I mean? So that’s why when they saw Kobe [Bryant], they were like, ‘Oh, my God.’ But now everybody has skill.”

Wild quote from the Ant Man.

When you read it, the fact that he started the entire statement off by saying that he didn’t even watch should have been enough to realize that Anthony Edwards was just talking shit – something that he’s done for years at this point.

It’s also just insane to suggest that only Michael Jordan, while he’s certainly the GOAT, is the only NBA player with skill from “back in the day”.

I also feel old as shit now that Anthony Edwards considers the 90’s “back in the day” but that’s beyond the point.

The entire quote was ridiculous and should have never been taken seriously. The on-going debate between current and past NBA players on which generation is always a dumb argument and/or comparison to make. You have JJ Redick claiming Jerry “The Logo” West didn’t play anyone, Anthony Edwards basically saying they are all ass, and a million other conversations about who’s the “best” to ever play the game.

All of that is nonsense and just used to create engagement and conversation about the NBA and basketball in general. Comparing players from the past to a game that has completely evolved into a different product in 2024 is silly.

Unfortunately, the debate and stupid conversations will not end today.

Magic Johnson and Isaiah Thomas took issue with Anthony Edwards’ comments and each issued their own responses.

Isiah Thomas: “Propaganda works…”

Honestly, I don’t really understand the quote from Thomas but that’s beyond the point. Thomas was one of the best point guards to ever play the game and if you don’t know and/or believe that, just go watch some tape of him playing against the Lakers – specifically in 1988 during the NBA Finals, Game 6. He dropped 25 points in a quarter and finished with 43 points overall. It was a spectacle. Period.

Magic Johnson: “I never respond to a guy who’s never won a championship…”

Okay. I like that, but my follow up question would have been in regards to Philly’s own Allen Iverson. Is that someone who Magic would respond to? My guess is that he would, but even that doesn’t settle it because Edwards hasn’t reached A.I.’s level yet.

You could also name a million other NBA players that won a championship but were absolute dog shit but regardless, Magic is essentially making the point that Edwards still has a lot of work to do in the NBA to be mentioned alongside the greats – which I think everyone is in agreement with.

Moral of the Story: Anthony Edwards is going to talk a ton of shit and he’s definitely doing some amazing, alien-like things on a basketball court in this generation’s version of the NBA. No doubt about it. At the same time, don’t be surprised when NBA legends chime in to set the record straight.
