Phillies 5th starter carousel continues, Seth Johnson gets shelled by the Marlins in 10-1 loss on Sunday
The Philadelphia Phillies hunt for a fifth starter continues after the latest piece in the rotation carousel failed miserably in Miami on Sunday.
Seth Johnson was acquired by the Phillies at the MLB Trade Deadline in a deal that sent Gregory Soto to the Baltimore Orioles. He was drafted as a CB-A pick, No. 40 overall by the Baltimore Orioles and made it to the O’s Double-A Affiliate before being dealt to Philly where he’s pitched in Lehigh Valley for the IronPigs.
Seth Johnson was solid in his three starts in Lehigh Valley. Over 16 innings, (three starts), he posted a 0.56 ERA, allowing just five hits and one earned run while striking out 13 to the tune of a .069 WHIP. In the minor leagues this season, Johnson went 2-7 with a 2.33 ERA with 83 strikeouts and a 1.20 WHIP over 23 starts and 88.2 innings pitched.
None of that, and I mean none of it, translated over to the major league level. In Seth Johnson’s debut with the Philadelphia Phillies, Seth Johnson was a complete and utter disaster.
Seth Johnson allowed nine runs on eight hits and walked three in just 2.1 innings of work. He entered Major League Baseball history books as the second place in AL/NL history to allow nine or more earned runs and three or more walks without any strikeouts in his MLB Debut since Hanson Horsey accomplished that feat on April 27, 1912. Phillies 5th Starter Carousel:
- Michael Mercado – Nope
- Koby Allard – Nope
- Tyler Phillips – Nope
- Seth Johnson – Nope
Trust me, Seth Johnson can do whatever he wants on the mound, including being absolutely terrible, but the Phillies still need to do their part offensively. Marlins starter Edward Cabrera held the lineup hitless through five innings before Brandon Marsh hit a single in the sixth.
The deficit was too much to mount a comeback for the Phillies and after Aaron Nola returned to Earth on Saturday in Miami, the Phillies ended up splitting the four-game set against the Fish, losing the final two games.
Phillies Standings Update:
With the loss, the Phillies now lead the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets by seven games in the NL East standings with 19 remaining in the 2024 MLB season.
The Phillies continue to go back-and-forth with the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League standings and are back to a one-game deficit for the best record and overall, the Phillies trail the Dodgers by one game for the best record in Major League Baseball, while holding a three-game lead over the Milwaukee Brewers – who are in third place.Â
Cristopher Sanchez (10-9, 3.45 ERA) will be on the mound for the Phillies tonight as they return home to face the Tampa Bay Rays at Citizens Bank Park.
