Victor Robles Steals Home

WATCH: Seattle Mariners’ Victor Robles with the most boneheaded play in Major League Baseball this season

I think it’s safe to say that Seattle Mariners’ outfielder Victor Robles probably wants this one back. On Tuesday night, the Mariners were trailing the New York Yankees 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning at T-Mobile Park.

They had the prime opportunity to turn things around. Seattle loaded the bases. There were two outs with Justin Turner – known for delivering in clutch moments – at the plate.

Yankees’ starting pitcher Luis Gil was in major trouble and fell behind in a 3-0 count to Turner which as you probably know, is a hitter’s dream, even more so when there are ducks on the pond.

Obviously with the bases juiced, the runners were going to be moving on contact and unfortunately for the Mariners, Victor Robles thought he’d get a head start, taking off from third base to steal home.

No seriously. Victor Robles tried to steal home with the Mariners down two, the bases loaded, two outs, and Justin Turner at the plate with a 3-0 count.

Hero Ball: Victor Robles tries to steal home with bases loaded, 3-0 count

I think it’s safe to say that no one – and I mean no one, was expecting Victor Robles to do that – which maybe was the point? Not sure honestly but it was probably the worst play in all of Major League Baseball this season.

Luis Gil gunned him down at the plate. The Mariners went from a 3-0 count to Justin Turner with the bases loaded to ending the inning with zero runs and a brutal mistake from Victor Robles. For those who lack baseball knowledge, Turner needed just one more ball to walk in a run, and given his seven career grand slams, a big swing could’ve put Seattle in the lead.

Instead, the Yankees dodged the bullet, and the Mariners were left empty-handed.

The Victor Robles failed attempt to steal home was a moment that sums up the Mariners’ season. It didn’t help that the game spiraled out of control and they ended up losing to the Yankees 11-2 either.

Once leading the AL West by 10 games, the Seattle Mariners are now fighting just to make it into the Wild Card.

The Mariners are sitting 2nd in the AL West, five games back of the division-leading Astros and three behind the Twins for the final Wild Card spot.

With only a 4.4% chance to make the playoffs, according to FanGraphs, they’re in must-win territory if they want any shot at sneaking into the postseason.

Seattle’s tiebreaker scenarios aren’t exactly in their favor.

They’ve already lost the head-to-head tiebreakers against the Orioles, Royals, Tigers, and Twins, which could come back to haunt them. But there’s still hope when it comes to the Astros. Seattle is 6-4 against Houston this season, with three games remaining. The Mariners need just one win in that final series to lock in the tiebreaker, which could be crucial. If they finish the regular season tied with Houston, that win would hand Seattle the AL West crown.

The path is tough, but not impossible. They’ll need to take care of business and hope for a little help, but stranger things have happened in baseball – just not stealing home with the bases loaded and one of your best hitters at the plate, working a 3-0 count.
