Andy Ibañez clutches up, Detroit Tigers knock the Houston Astros out of the 2024 MLB postseason
The Houston Astros’ postseason run came to a surprising end today thanks to the Detroit Tigers and an ultimate clutch-up moment from pinch-hitter Andy Ibañez.
In Game 2 of the AL Wild Card Series on Wednesday, Ibañez came off the bench in the 8th inning for a pinch-hitting opportunity with the bases loaded and two outs.
The Tigers were locked in a 2-2 tie, and the pressure was sky-high as Ibañez faced Josh Hader, a five-time All-Star. Down 1-2 in the count, Ibañez rose to the occasion, ripping a 98-mph fastball down the left-field line for a bases-clearing double.
That clutch swing was all Detroit needed, propelling them to a 5-2 victory and a sweep of the best-of-three series.
Detroit Tigers: Andy Ibañez Clutches Up, Clears Bases
The Detroit Tigers’ bullpen took care of business from there, recording the final six outs to secure the win and punch their ticket to the ALDS, where they’ll face the Cleveland Guardians.
For Ibañez, a platoon hitter who excels against left-handers, it was a particularly sweet moment. He had struggled in the second half of the season, batting under .200 since the All-Star break, but with an .802 OPS against lefties, he was exactly who the Tigers needed in that moment.
Good. The Houston Astros are an embarrassment to baseball.
Detroit’s postseason hopes were riding on this game, and Ibañez delivered when it mattered most. The Tigers were 55-63 on August 10th and now, they’ll head to Cleveland to play the Guardians in the ALDS. Welcome to October baseball.
