WATCH: Ryan Howard and Jimmy Rollins talk Game 4 of the 2009 NLDS
As Phillies fans eagerly await the result of the Mets-Brewers Wild Card series to see who the team will face in the NLDS, Ryan Howard and Jimmy Rollins took a trip down memory lane to relive a key moment from the 2009 NLDS.
In Game 4 against the Rockies, Howard’s clutch, game-tying double in the 9th inning off Huston Street paved the way for Jayson Werth to drive in the go-ahead run. Brad Lidge then closed it out, sending the Phillies to the NLCS after winning the series 3-1.
Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard discuss Game 4 of the 2009 NLCS
I remember exactly when this happened. I was in college at West Virginia University and in a MICRO (or MACRO?) 101 midterm when I received an update on the game via text from my boys back at our apartment saying that the Phillies were mounting a comeback in the 9th inning.
I immediately filled out the scantron bubbles, walked out of the midterm, and caught Ryan Howard’s game-tying heroics. Needless to say, I wasn’t exactly an ace in economics but there was no chance in hell I was going to risk missing what’s now considered a legendary moment in Philadelphia Phillies baseball.
With 2 outs and a 2-1 count in the top of the ninth inning- with two runners on base, Ryan Howard ripped a bases-clearing, game-tying double off Rockies pitcher Hudson Street.
Jayson Werth then came to the plate and hit a bloop-single to right-center field to give the Phillies a 5-4 victory and a 3-1 series win over the Colorado Rockies.Â
