WATCH: New York Yankees fans, obsessed with Joel Embiid, chant about him following 6-5 win over the Royals in the ALDS
On Saturday night, the Yankees eked out a 6-5 win over the Kansas City Royals to take a 1-0 lead in the ALDS. You’d think a game like that, full of drama and momentum swings, would have Yankees fans fired up, locked in on their team’s playoff run, right?
Well, that wasn’t quite the case. Instead of rallying behind their boys, Yankees fans took a different route, breaking into a chant that had nothing to do with baseball.
The target? Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers.
Yep, you read that right—during a pivotal playoff baseball game, Yankees fans decided to chant “F*** Embiid” in unison. If you’re scratching your head like the rest of us, you’re not alone.
Yankees Fans Chant “Fuck Embiid” at the ALDS
Now, why would Yankees fans, who are watching their team battle the Royals in the postseason, be chanting about a basketball player from another city? Beats me. It’s one of those New York mysteries that might never make sense, but let’s give it a shot.
New York has this weird, almost unhealthy obsession with Joel Embiid. It’s like the guy lives rent-free in their heads year-round.ok
No matter how many Knicks seasons come and go, no matter how many new lineups they trot out in Madison Square Garden, they can’t seem to shake the fact that Embiid owns them every time he steps on the court.
Maybe that’s why they were chanting his name during a baseball game? They’re acknowledging their basketball overlord, paying tribute to the guy who dominates their team every year?
I mean seriously, the Knicks might have beat the 76ers in the playoffs last season but at the same time, Embiid was playing on one leg with half a face and still made them look silly.
Is it bizarre? Absolutely. But hey, in the minds of those fans, maybe it’s their way of coping with the fact that New York, despite all its swagger, still can’t keep Embiid from running the show whenever Philly comes to town.
