Where the Sixers offseason ranks among all 30 teams in latest encouraging NBA GM Survey
As Sixers fans, we can all pretty much agree—Daryl Morey just wrapped up his best offseason as the Sixers’ GM, hands down.
The highlight? None other than Paul George signing that monster 4-year, $212 million deal with Philly.
But that wasn’t the only move that has the fanbase buzzing. Morey made several savvy signings to strengthen the depth around Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, setting the stage for a huge year.
Heading into the season, the Sixers’ roster is one of the most complete in the NBA, which should finally put them in a prime position to break that second-round curse and, more importantly, take down the Boston Celtics.
And if you’re looking for some validation, the NBA’s annual GM survey dropped, and it’s looking pretty good for Philly. Out of the 30 GMs, 33% voted the Sixers as having the second-best offseason in the league—just behind the Oklahoma City Thunder, who took 37% of the vote. Not a bad spot to be in at all.
But here’s where I’m going to disagree with those GMs. How is OKC’s offseason better than Philly’s? Yes, they addressed a key issue by upgrading at center with Isaiah Hartenstein, but let’s not act like Hartenstein is some kind of All-Star. The Thunder were already the top seed in the West last year, so while Hartenstein is a nice addition, it’s hard to see how much higher they can go.
On the other hand, the Sixers were stuck in the Play-In Tournament last year, largely because Embiid missed time with an injury.
Now, with Paul George in the mix, Philly is primed to take a huge leap. This isn’t just about adding another star—this move gives the Sixers a real chance to contend for a title. So yeah, I’m rolling with the Sixers as having the best offseason, and I don’t think it’s even that close.

I should note, that while OKC got voted as having the best offseason, the GM’s did make it clear that they think Paul George will have the biggest impact of all the offseason additions, with 67% of them giving him the nod.
Which makes sense, George is a 9-time All-Star and seems like a seamless fit alongside Embiid and Maxey. His two-way game, off-ball ability, and experience, are all much needed traits for a team and organization who hasn’t had a wing player like this in quite some time.
Aside from just the GM side of things, there were a few other notable survey results in regards to the Sixers. Joel Embiid tied for third in the MVP straw poll, showing that the real reigning, defending, MVP still has plenty of respect heading into this season. And let’s be honest, if it wasn’t for that fluke injury, Joel would have won back-to-back MVP’s.
With that said, I guess those GM’s didn’t pay attention to what the big fella said the other day about individual awards.
Joel Embiid on his 2024-25 priorities
He stated that he doesn’t have an “agenda” for individual accolades like MVP or All-NBA honors. His primary goal is to be ready for the playoffs and leading the Sixers to a championship.
To circle back to these survey results, head coach Nick Nurse earned his respect too. He came in fourth for the best in-game adjustments category. Which is very encouraging and a sign that you can’t use the coaching excuse for this team anymore.
And honestly, I thought Nurse was really good in last year’s playoffs, which is interesting because it seemed some fans weren’t as pleased. But, that’s Philadelphia fans for you.
