Matvei Michkov notches first career point in the NHL, Flyers drop second game of the year, 6-3 to the Flames

If you turned off the Flyers game when they fell behind by three goals in the third period of their 6-3 loss to Calgary on Saturday, you weren’t the only one.

After a late night watching the season opener, staying up again to watch another loss was rough. I get it, especially after the Flyers fell behind three goals in the third period but if that was the case, then you did miss Matvei Michkov tally his first NHL point.

Matvei Michkov notched his first NHL point, assisting on Travis Konecny’s goal that cut the deficit to 5-3 with just under three minutes left in the game.

Matvei Michkov first point in the NHL:

This was one of the few bright spots for a Flyers team that struggled throughout the game. While there were some highlights—like Konecny’s shorthanded goal and Bobby Brink’s beautiful pass to Joel Farabee for a second-period goal—the team lacked cohesion.

Notes: Travis Konecny scored his 10th shorthanded goal since last season, the highest in the NHL. Scott Laughton assisted and has the most shorthanded assists in the league with 16.

Bobby Brink finds Joel Farabee:

Bad Penalty Kill: In the first two games, the Flyers have surrendered two power-play goals against Calgary, including one on a 5-on-3 where Rasmus Ristolainen’s misstep left the front of the net vulnerable.

Bobby Brink meanwhile, has shown a lot of promise through two games, picking up two assists and showcasing the offensive vision Flyers fans have been hoping for. He looks like he might be on the verge of a breakout season.

On the downside, the Flyers’ even-strength offense has been lacking, with just one goal in each of their first two games. They’ve relied heavily on special teams, and that needs to change if they want to compete consistently.

Tyson Foerster’s decision to drop the gloves and come to the defense of Jaime Drysdale was awesome, but at the time time, his decision earned him an instigator penalty and a 10-minute misconduct. Foerster’s absence played a role in the Flames’ 5-on-3 goal, so while it’s good to protect teammates, maybe pick and choose your battles better…

Up Next for the Flyers

The Flyers are one of only five teams to start the season with back-to-back games, both on the road and with a time zone change. That’s a rough way to begin a season for sure.

They continue their Western road trip with a late-night matchup against the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday. The Oilers have struggled and have been outscored 11-2 in their first two games, but they’ll be looking to bounce back while the Flyers are looking for a chance to take advantage of a team off to a rough start.
