For many, including myself, Dumas’ name may ring a bell primarily through his presence on social media.

Jason Dumas’ relationship with Philadelphia sports fans has been rocky at times. Sixers Twitter, in particular, hasn’t always embraced his reporting. This sentiment is something that we’ve covered extensivley over the years, providing context to some of the controversies surrounding Dumas’ reports.

One notable incident occurred during the Ben Simmons saga in 2021. At the time, Jason Dumas tweeted about the absence of any organized effort to boo Simmons at the Sixers’ Camden practice facility. His message, seemingly influenced by Klutch Sports, the agency representing Simmons, left some fans skeptical. Another moment that drew attention was a report involving Tyrese Maxey, which Dumas later walked back to some extent.

Reporting, as anyone in the industry knows, is a tough gig. It becomes even harder when covering stories where the facts are murky or constantly changing. Journalists can be caught in the crossfire, reporting information that’s accurate at one moment only for the situation to shift quickly. In those cases, it’s easy for a reporter to look misinformed, despite their best efforts to keep the public updated.

In Philadelphia, aligning yourself against Crossing Broad can be risky. The website has a long history of calling out reporters, and Dumas has found himself on the receiving end of some of their criticism. However, it’s important to note that only a small portion of 6 ABC’s audience is likely aware of his history with Crossing Broad or the nuances of his past reporting.

As Dumas steps into his new role at 6 ABC, Philadelphia viewers will form their opinions based on his current work, not old tweets from 2021. Only time will tell how his coverage will resonate with the passionate sports fans of Philadelphia.
