Phillies sign South Jersey native Cody Stashak to a minor league deal

The Phillies are making a local connection with their latest signing, inking right-handed reliever Cody Stashak to a minor-league deal, as first reported by Matt Gelb of The Athletic.

Stashak, who hails from Somers Point, South Jersey, last appeared in the majors with the San Francisco Giants back in 2022. His career has unfortunately been defined by flashes of potential and frustrating injuries.

From 2019 to 2022, he displayed solid command, but his time on the mound was cut short by lower back issues and a torn labrum in his right shoulder—tough injuries for any pitcher, let alone a 30-year-old trying to make his way back to the big leagues.

This past season, Stashak spent time in AAA, where he struggled with consistency. Over 36.1 innings, he allowed 22 earned runs on 45 hits, resulting in a 5.45 ERA. However, his 44 strikeouts to just 12 walks show that he can still miss bats, especially with his slider-heavy approach.

If we’re being honest, outside of being a local kid ball player from South Jersey, this was almost not worth a post. While the odds might be long, this is the kind of low-risk move that could pay off.

With the Phillies looking to bolster their bullpen depth heading into 2025, taking a flyer on Stashak makes sense. Whether he can shake off the injuries and rediscover his form remains to be seen.
