Phillies name Preston Mattingly as new GM, Sam Fuld prepares to step into Business Ops role

The Phillies are making moves in the front office, promoting Preston Mattingly to general manager as of Friday. Mattingly, the son of Yankees legend and former manager Don Mattingly, steps into the GM role under Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski.

Preston Mattingly named Phillies’ General Manager

Sam Fuld, who has served as GM since 2020, isn’t leaving, though. He’s studying for his MBA at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, and once he graduates in May 2026, he’ll transition to the role of team president of business operations.

Until then, Fuld will split GM duties with Mattingly as he focuses on his studies and prepares for his next big step with the Phillies.

For Mattingly, 37, this promotion caps off a steady rise through the ranks. After a minor league playing career from 2006 to 2011, he turned his focus to academics and basketball, playing for Lamar University and earning his bachelor’s degree in 2016. He then joined the San Diego Padres, eventually working his way up to coordinator of major league advance scouting and game planning.

The Phillies brought him on as director of player development in 2021, and he was promoted to assistant GM of player development last November. Now, he’s taking on the full GM title, ready to shape the Phillies’ future.

The Phillies also made two other key front office promotions. Luke Murton is stepping into the director of player development role, and Edwar Gonzalez will take over as director of hitting development. These moves round out an exciting offseason start for the Phillies, who look poised to build on their success with new voices and leadership.

Of course, the Mattingly name carries weight in baseball. Don Mattingly was a six-time All-Star with the Yankees and managed both the Dodgers and Marlins.

Now, Preston’s making his own mark in the baseball world, and Phillies fans have reason to be excited about the fresh direction this front-office shake-up promises.
