Smart: Saquon Barkley has slick loophole in Eagles contract
When star running back Saquon Barkley signed with the Eagles in free agency, he was aware of the situation.
QB Jalen Hurts had 41 career rushing touchdowns entering the 2024 season, most of which resulting from the hated ‘Tush Push.’ As many running backs have learned over the years, you aren’t getting that touchdown if you get tackled inside the two-yard line.
That exact scenario has happened to Barkley on several occasions this season — eleven, to be exact, most in the NFL.
Regardless of who scores, however, Barkley’s payday isn’t affected, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Barkley’s three-year, $37.8M contract reportedly has zero dollars in incentives based on touchdowns.
That’s a wise move by his agent, Ed Berry.
Barkley has other incentives tied to performance this season:
- 1,500 scrimmage yards: $250,000
- 2,000 scrimmage yards: $250,000
- First-Team All-Pro: $500,000
- Second-Team All-Pro: $250,000
- Win NFCCG: $250,000
- Win Super Bowl: $250,000
Most of Barkley’s ten rushing touchdowns this season have come on explosive runs from 15+ yards out. Of the times Barkley has been tackled inside the two-yard line, Hurts was pushed into the endzone on five instances. Barkley doesn’t care as long as they win.
“Whether it’s me scoring, Jalen scoring, just finding ways to get in the end zone. That’s the way to win football games.”
