Spicy P: Doug Pederson responds to job status question following Jaguars embarrassing 52-6 loss to Lions
The Jacksonville Jaguars delivered an absolutely embarrassing performance on Sunday that obviously sparked speculation about a head coaching change, but Doug Pederson remains steadfast in his focus despite the team’s latest defeat. Which is the obvious approach and messaging to the team, but at the end of the day, when is this guy going to realize that Press Taylor should probably not having any coaching position at the NFL level?
The Jaguars were wrecked 52-6 by the Detroit Lions at Ford Field, marking their fourth consecutive loss. Ahead of the game, reports suggested that a lopsided defeat in Week 11 might jeopardize Pederson’s job security. This was not only a one-sided contest, but one that could certainly cause some heads to roll.
When asked after the loss if he believes this could be his final game as Jacksonville’s head coach, Pederson, who led the Philadelphia Eagles to their first Super Bowl victory in 2018, emphasized his commitment to moving forward. The 56-year-old coach stated that his attention is on preparing the team for their Week 13 matchup against the Houston Texans following their bye week.

“I can’t control that,” Pederson said. “Listen, I’ve been around this league a long time. If it’s going to happen, it’s going to happen obviously. But at the same time, I have a job to do.”
Any team going into a Sunday with Mac Jones as their starting quarterback is in for trouble. With that said Mac Jones made his second consecutive start in place of the injured Trevor Lawrence. While Lawrence’s absence due to a shoulder injury has certainly hurt, losing by nearly 50 points isn’t something any coach can easily explain away. A performance like that raises serious concerns about effort, and when a team looks like it’s checked out, the blame often lands squarely on the head coach.
With Sunday’s thrashing, the Jaguars now sit at an abysmal 2-9. It’s a far cry from the promise they showed last year when they raced out to an 8-3 start, only to stumble to a 9-8 finish and miss the playoffs. That collapse has lingered in the background, and whispers earlier this season about Doug Pederson possibly losing the locker room are starting to feel more like a warning siren.
For a coach who led the Philadelphia Eagles to a Super Bowl victory just a few years ago, this kind of unraveling is a tough look. The clock is certainly ticking in Jacksonville for Doug Pederson. Which, I can’t help but wonder what might be next for Doug, if he still does have any NFL aspirations after this. For what it’s worth the Jaguars aren’t much of a respectable franchise as the owner’s son, Tony Khan, is also the owner of AEW (All Elite Wrestling), which is a very poor competitor to the king of professional wrestling, the WWE.
