Report sheds light Daryl Morey and Nick Nurse’s job security amid 76ers’ struggles
The Philadelphia 76ers are in a complete tailspin, but once again, the franchise’s leadership team is hiding behind closed doors, safe and sound while the team burns in the national spotlight for all the wrong reasons.
According to Sam Amick of The Athletic, both president Daryl Morey and head coach Nick Nurse are “safe” for now, with no internal discussions about their job statuses despite the Sixers sitting at an NBA-worst 2-11.
That’s a bummer but unfortunately, that’s par for the course with this team—accountability seems to be a foreign concept.
Awkward: Tyrese Maxey challenged Joel Embiid during team meeting after 2-11 start
I’m willing to give Nick Nurse a pass. Much like every head coach in the Philadelphia 76ers, they are sent out to the podium like sacrificial lambs to answer questions about their team and players without really having a rhyme or reason as to any situation they are faced with.
Plus, Nick Nurse, in his second year as head coach, at least has the excuse of injuries and limited time with the team’s “Big Three” of Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Paul George on the court together.
I know this 76ers’ team is in complete disarray right now but I think it would be foolish to believe that this team, healthier, can easily win 12 of 15 games at any point this winter and be right back in the mix for one of the top spots in the Eastern Conference Standings.
Now that we’re all on the same page, let’s talk about the most overrated general manager in all of basketball, Daryl Morey. Morey has been attempting to steer this ship since 2020 and for all his supposed “genius”, his tenure has been filled with questionable decisions and radio silence when the going gets tough.
His refusal to offer James Harden a max contract is defensible, but turning around and maxing out a declining Paul George? In the small sample size, again plagued by injuries and not having his guys healthy around him, it’s clear that so far, PG’s game and now contract is aging like spoiled milk.
And while Morey gets credit for drafting Maxey, Jared McCain and signing Kelly Oubre Jr. to a team-friendly deal, let’s not forget that he also turned the Ben Simmons fiasco into a Harden rental and then completely mismanaged that relationship too as it ended with James going on a world tour to let everyone and their mother’s know that our GM is a “liar.”
So why does Daryl Morey still have a job?
Well, because no one above him wants anything to do with the Philadelphia 76ers.
Joshua Harris has his “dream job” as the owner of the Washington Commanders and could give two shits about the 76ers these days.
Just take a look at what he was doing across the street at The Linc on Thursday night and how he’s completely ignored fans in his quest to build 76 Place at Market East.
Harris has made it clear where his priorities lie, and it’s not with the Sixers. Between his NFL investments (hello, Washington Commanders) and his growing sports empire, Harris seems more interested in padding his portfolio than building a contender in Philly.
The silence from the top amid the Sixers’ implosion is deafening, and it’s hard to avoid the conclusion that this is just another asset to them—not a team they genuinely care about.
Fans deserve better.
The 76ers have a passionate, loyal fan base that has stuck by this team through countless rebuilds, bad trades, and playoff collapses.
But instead of decisive leadership, they’re stuck with a president who won’t speak up when things fall apart and an owner who treats the team like a side project. If the Sixers keep this up, don’t be surprised if apathy replaces the loyalty they’ve long taken for granted.
