Report: Giants releasing QB Daniel Jones after six seasons with team
The New York Giants have officially parted ways with Daniel Jones.
The veteran quarterback requested his release after being benched and demoted to fourth-string this week.

“Daniel came to see me this morning and asked if we would release him,” owner John Mara said in a statement. “We mutually agreed that would be best for him and for the team. Daniel has been a great representative of our organization, first class in every way.
“His handling of this situation yesterday exemplifies just that. We are all disappointed in how things have worked out. We hold Daniel in high regard and have a great appreciation for him. We wish him nothing but the best in the future.”
New York essentially shut him down so Jones wouldn’t get injured and trigger a $23M guarantee on his contract for next season.
The Giants had made their bed after handing Jones a $160M extension in 2022 and letting All-Pro RB Saquon Barkley go to a division rival for nothing. Jones struggled throughout the season, and it became apparent that his days in New York were numbered.
Once Jones clears waivers (the size of his contract makes that certain), he’ll be free to sign with any NFL team immediately.
The Giants will carry a dead cap hit of $47.1M in 2024 and $22.21M in 2025 following the release.
Daniel Jones certainly still has a lot to prove, but… I think it’s safe to say he’s a lot better than Jalen Hurts.
