76ers snap 5-game losing streak thanks to Jared McCain and Tyrese Maxey, beat the Nets 113-98
Led by Jared McCain and Tyrese Maxey, the Philadelphia 76ers finally snapped their five-game losing streak and, more importantly, picked up their first win in regulation this season with a 113-98 victory over the Brooklyn Nets. Let that sink in—3-12 feels slightly less brutal with a “W” on the board.
But this wasn’t smooth sailing. If you’ve been watching the Sixers this year, you know the routine: take a double-digit lead, watch it evaporate in real time, rinse, repeat.
Up 51-38 late in the 2nd quarter, the 76ers did what they do best—collapse—heading into halftime clinging to a 53-50 lead. By the start of the 3rd, they let the Nets run wild with a 16-6 burst that had all the makings of another disaster.
Enter Tyrese Maxey and Jared McCain.
The tiny backcourt duo flat-out took over in the 4th quarter, turning a one-point deficit midway through into a 19-0 run that buried Brooklyn for good.
They combined for 56 of the team’s 113 points, with Jared McCain extending his insane streak to 8 games with 3+ threes—a new NBA rookie record. McCain also dropped his seventh consecutive 20+ point game, and yeah, it’s safe to say this kid’s going to be a problem.
Jared McCain: 30 PTS | 5 REB | 3 AST | 2 STL
Side Note: As I requested, every time Jared McCain drops 30+ points AND the 76ers win, Conway will recreate one of McCain’s TikTok videos. Tonight, we have our first video and it’s absolutely amazing.
Thank you, Ryan Conway. Back to Tyrese Maxey.
Maxey, still on a minutes restriction, shook off the rust from the Grizzlies game and delivered a crisp 26 points in 27 minutes, joining McCain in the 4th-quarter heroics.
Jared McCain and Tyrese Maxey delivered the kind of one-two punch the Sixers have been desperately searching for all year and gave me flashbacks of Steph Curry and Klay Thompson.
Injury Updates:
Joel Embiid: Let’s get this out of the way—Embiid missed another game with the dreaded “knee management” label, and now we know why. He’s reportedly dealing with swelling and will sit out Sunday’s game against the Clippers as well. Considering all the careful ramp-ups, the oversized knee brace, and the “no back-to-backs” approach, missing two straight isn’t exactly comforting. No structural damage has been mentioned (yet), but this is something to watch.
Paul George: He sat this one out for what Nick Nurse called a minor issue. No structural damage, so expect the podcaster-in-chief back in the lineup within a week, working on his cardio.
Caleb Martin: After a hard fall, Martin was grabbing his tailbone but stayed in the game. That said, can someone get this guy some glasses or new shoes? He steps on the 3-point line more than anyone I’ve ever seen. One more toe-on-the-line moment and I might slam my head through a wall.
Other Notes:
Can we talk about the Sixers broadcast crew’s new bird’s-eye camera angle? Who thought this was a good idea? It’s like watching ants play basketball. There’s a reason the traditional camera angle has worked for decades—stop trying to reinvent the wheel. Let’s hope this is another NBA Cup gimmick destined for the trash heap.
For now, the 76ers have something to build on. It wasn’t perfect, but they showed fight when it mattered, and Maxey and McCain look like a backcourt duo worth getting excited about. Now let’s see if they can build on it—or if we’ll all be back here next week complaining about blown leads and questionable coaching decisions.
