Sixers finally get their 4th win of the season against the shorthanded Pistons, 111-96 final
The Sixers pulled out their fourth win of the season in style, steamrolling the shorthanded Pistons, 111-96, in Detroit.
Sure, Detroit came in at 9-13, down Cade Cunningham, and playing the second game of a back-to-back—but when your season feels cursed by every injury under the sun, you take the W and run.
Unfortunately, the injury bug didn’t clock out. Andre Drummond sprained his ankle just four minutes in, and Paul George exited late with a right knee issue. At this point, the Sixers’ bench might as well double as a mobile clinic.
The Sixers jumped out to an 18-point lead early but let Detroit claw back to make it a five-point game by halftime, 57-52.
Tyrese Maxey started cold (just 3-of-12 from the field in the first half), but in the third quarter, he flipped the switch. A 14-point eruption from Maxey crushed any hopes of a Pistons comeback.
It’s not always pretty with Maxey—he’ll fire up the occasional eyebrow-raising shot—but when he gets going, it’s game over. His ability to ignite at any moment has been the Sixers’ lifeline.
The Tyrese Maxey Show:
Why is Nick Nurse keeping Jared McCain out of the starting five?
It feels like a troll job at this point. Jared McCain’s minutes have been inconsistent, and his impact felt nonexistent in this one—he didn’t even attempt a shot until the third quarter and finished 0-for-3 from three-point range.
Growing pains are fine, but McCain needs to be more involved if he’s going to develop into the offensive weapon this team needs.
On a brighter note, youth was served. With Drummond out, Nurse turned to his young guys, and they delivered. Adem Bona, in just 20 minutes, brought the kind of energy and defensive presence this team has been missing. Three blocks and a handful of hustle plays later, Bona has Sixers fans calling for more minutes—and deservedly so.
KJ Martin had his best game in a Sixers jersey, dropping 19 points, snagging six rebounds, dishing three assists, and swatting three shots. His high-flying dunks and all-around energy were exactly what this team needed.
Can we start the “KJ for Dunk Contest” petition already?
Meanwhile, Ricky Council IV added 17 points off the bench, reminding everyone that youth and athleticism can’t be overlooked. With the vets looking gassed, maybe it’s time for Nurse to rethink those rotations. The young guns brought the hustle, the defense, and the spark that the aging vets just can’t replicate anymore.
The General Council:
Paul George chipped in 11 points and five assists in 26 minutes before his knee flared up. The good news? It’s not the knee he hyperextended twice already this season.
The bad news? The Sixers desperately need George healthy, and at this rate, bubble wrap might be the only solution. This wasn’t a perfect win, but it was a glimpse of what the Sixers can be. Maxey continues to shine as the go-to guy, the young players are proving their worth, and if the injuries ever let up, there’s still hope for this squad..but it’s running out fast.
That’ll do it for me. If you need me, I’ll be putting pins in my Nick Nurse voodoo doll, learning Jared McCain dances, and watching as many internet doctors tell me how fucked Joel Embiid’s knee actually is. Yes, I know it’s Saturday night- sounds like a party, right?
