Is Dave Dombrowski high? Phillies reportedly offered the Houston Astros Nick Castellanos and Alec Bohm for Kyle Tucker
The Phillies’ offseason just got spicier, with Jim Bowden claiming on MLB Network Radio this morning that Philly offered Nick Castellanos and Alec Bohm to the Astros for Kyle Tucker. On paper, it’s a bold swing for one of baseball’s best all-around players, but it also raises some serious questions about the direction this team is heading under Dave Dombrowski.
Jim Bowden: The Phillies offered Alec Bohm and Nick Castellanos for Astros’ Kyle Tucker
Let’s start with the obvious: Kyle Tucker is a stud. He’s a legitimate MVP candidate who does it all—hits for power, plays Gold Glove-caliber defense, and runs the bases like a gazelle. If there’s a player worth making a blockbuster move for, it’s Tucker.
Offering Castellanos and Bohm feels like a half-measure. Castellanos, while solid, is approaching the latter stages of his career, and Bohm, while steady, isn’t exactly lighting the world on fire and has been mentioned a million times in trade offers before the entire idea was shot down by Topper at Winter Meetings last week.
So, what does this mean for third base? Again, just last week, Rob Thomson said Alec Bohm wasn’t on the trading block. Now, here we are again, with Bohm reportedly included in a massive trade offer. I guess Topper can say they weren’t shopping Bohm but rather offering him up like a lamb to slaughter?
Rob Thomson told reporters that the Phillies are not ‘shopping’ Alec Bohm >>
Alec Bohm Right Now (Probably)

If the Phillies are truly shopping Bohm, what’s the plan at the hot corner? Are they ready to roll the dice on a market that doesn’t have many options?
Phillies asking for Logan Gilbert or George Kirby in exchange for Alec Bohm is laughable >>
Does that mean the Phillies would be looking to sign Alex Bregman in free agency? That’s a hefty price tag but maybe it’s a sign they are still in on Nolan Arenado. Maybe it’s nothing and Dave Dombrowski is content with a glaring question mark at third base heading into 2025?
Is this a sign the Phillies are still in on Nolan Arenado, or are they content with a glaring question mark at third base heading into 2025?
If they’re serious about moving Bohm, they’d better have a contingency plan because relying on stopgaps or internal options is a recipe for disaster.
This also brings us back to Dave Dombrowski.
Is he really the guy to “re-tool” the Phillies? His track record speaks for itself—he’s won everywhere he’s gone. But his reputation is built on aggressive moves and a win-now mindset, often at the expense of long-term flexibility.
The Phillies need more than just a flashy trade. They need to fix the rotation, add bullpen depth, and figure out what the future looks like at key positions. Tossing Bohm into trade talks doesn’t inspire confidence that there’s a clear vision for how this team improves in the long term.
But hey, Nolan Arenado is still out there. The Cardinals seem willing to at least entertain offers, and Arenado would solve a lot of problems for the Phillies at third base. If Dombrowski is serious about making a splash, why not put the chips on the table for one of the best third basemen of the past decade?
It might cost more prospects than he’s comfortable with, but pairing Arenado with Bryce Harper, Trea Turner, Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto could be the kind of move that gets this team over the hump.
So, where does this leave us? I’m honestly not too sure. The Phillies were laser-focused on Garrett Crochet and surprise, surprise, he ended up getting dealt to Boston in a ridiculous overpay fro the Red Sox.
Holy Overpay: Red Sox send four top prospects to Chicago White Sox for Garrett Crochet >>
The Phillies keep telling fans that they want to make a big move, but the strategy feels muddled
Are they trying to re-tool on the fly or completely reshape the roster? Is Dombrowski willing to gamble the future for a shot at another postseason run? And, most importantly, is there a plan at third base, or are we all just winging it?
If Tucker was the play and the Astros said no, fine. But now it’s time for Dombrowski to focus on what this team can do to fix its glaring holes. Whether that’s Arenado, another free agent, or something no one sees coming, one thing is clear: this offseason needs clarity and action, not half-baked trade offers that leave more questions than answers.

I suspect the Astros might bite if the Phils added one or two of their top prospects. Maybe Caba or Tait in addition to Casty and Bohm. It might be to late for Bohm given his immaturity and having the Phils drag his name around as trade bait since the end of last year. Bregman wants too much dough Arrenado is the way to go if the Red Birds would each a bunch of salary.
This is a stupid article. Phillies have already said they are not shopping Bohm. The so called writer put that in his article. Why even write this crap!!
David – it’s not a stupid article. It’s a report on what was offered, regardless of what the Phillies told the media.
