A Fresh Start for a Struggling Program
Delaware State is coming off a dismal 2024 campaign, finishing 1-11 with their lone victory back in August against Sacred Heart. The team’s final ten games were all losses, with most being blowouts. After back-to-back losing seasons under Lee Hull, the Hornets are clearly looking for a game-changing hire to breathe life back into their football program.
Jackson’s name recognition alone could spark interest in Delaware State, a program in desperate need of an identity and momentum. His NFL pedigree brings both credibility and potential for attracting recruits.
DeSean Jackson’s Resume
Jackson, 38, was one of the most electrifying wide receivers in NFL history. Over a 15-year career, Jackson played for six teams and earned three Pro Bowl nods, primarily with the Philadelphia Eagles. Known for his blazing speed and big-play ability, Jackson retired with over 11,000 receiving yards and an impressive 17.6 yards per catch average.
His standout season came in 2013 when he recorded 82 receptions for 1,332 yards and nine touchdowns. After stints with Washington, Tampa Bay, and others, he finished his career with brief appearances for the Rams, Raiders, and Ravens.
Since retiring, Jackson has begun dipping his toes into coaching, spending the 2024 season as an assistant at Woodrow Wilson High School in his hometown of Long Beach, California.
A New Era for HBCU Football
DeSean Jackson’s hire at Delaware State comes just days after another former NFL star, Michael Vick, was announced as the head coach at Norfolk State.
Both schools are members of the MEAC, meaning the two former Eagles teammates are set to face off during the 2025 season. The prospect of Jackson and Vick clashing on the sidelines adds an exciting subplot to HBCU football next year.
What Jackson Brings to Delaware State
Hiring Jackson is a bold move. While he lacks collegiate coaching experience, his NFL pedigree and reputation as a deep-threat receiver could inspire a struggling program. His connection to football’s younger generation, combined with his name recognition, may help the Hornets attract higher-caliber recruits and energize the fanbase.
Delaware State’s decision reflects a broader trend in HBCU football: leveraging the star power of former NFL players to raise the profile of their programs. With Jackson at the helm, the Hornets have a chance to turn the page on their recent struggles and write a new, exciting chapter.
The question now is whether DeSean Jackson can translate his on-field success into success on the sidelines. For Delaware State, it’s a gamble worth taking.
