Flyers let one get away, fall to Blue Jackets in a shootout
The Flyers couldn’t close the deal Tuesday night, squandering a third-period lead and losing to the Blue Jackets, 3-2, in a shootout. At Nationwide Arena, the Flyers found themselves on the wrong end of the hockey stick as Travis Konecny and Matvei Michkov misfired, while Columbus converted two of three attempts to seal the win.
This should have been a win for the Flyers
They definitely had their chances…Owen Tippett’s go-ahead goal in the third period, set up beautifully by Morgan Frost’s neutral zone interception, looked like it might hold. But with under five minutes left, Blue Jackets star defenseman Zach Werenski knotted things up with his second tally of the night.
From there, it was another Flyers overtime—a 14th trip beyond regulation this season—and they couldn’t make it count. Their shootout struggles continue to be a theme, with Konecny and Michkov failing to find the back of the net.
Silver Lining: For the most part, Ivan Fedotov looked solid in net
Ivan Fedotov made his first start in a week and gave the Flyers every chance to win. The towering 6’7” netminder turned away 26 of 28 shots, including three clutch saves in overtime. Fedotov’s heroics included a diving stop on Damon Severson late in the third and a key save on Adam Fantilli after a Brink turnover.
Goaltending has been a shaky point this season, so Fedotov’s strong performance was a much-needed bright spot, even in the jaws of defeat.
Game Notes:
- Morgan Frost extended his point streak to a season-best four games (3 goals, 2 assists).
- Seeler-Drysdale have combined for a goal and 4 assists in their last 3 games.
- Flyers are 1-6-1 in second game of back-to-back sets.
- This team hasn’t won three-straight games since November.
- Ivan Fedotov is good (I think).
The Flyers (19-20-6) couldn’t extend their modest win streak to three games, something they haven’t managed since November.
They will now look to rebound Thursday night against the Islanders, but they’ll need to address their late-game execution and shootout struggles if they want to climb back to .500.
The Blue Jackets (21-17-6), they’ve now won five straight and continue to dominate at home, boasting a 15-5-3 record at Nationwide Arena.
