Eagles steamroll Commanders, punch ticket to Super Bowl LIX with dominant NFC Championship win
What a turnaround for the Philadelphia Eagles. A team that looked lost at 2-2 back in September is now streaking into Super Bowl LIX after obliterating the Washington Commanders, 55-23, in the NFC Championship Game.
The 55 points set a conference title game record and left little doubt that Philly is the team to beat heading into the season’s final showdown.
From Questions to Champions of the NFC
The Eagles’ resurgence is nothing short of remarkable.
After a slow start, there were calls for head coach Nick Sirianni’s job, whispers of locker room discontent, and skepticism about Jalen Hurts’ ability to lead this team. Four months and just one loss later, the Eagles are NFC champs.
Against the Commanders, Philadelphia put together their most complete performance of the postseason. Hurts had his best game yet, tossing for 246 yards and a touchdown while rushing for three more scores.
Saquon Barkley was unstoppable, ripping off a 60-yard touchdown on his first touch and finishing with 118 yards and three total TDs. The defense was opportunistic as ever, forcing four turnovers that led directly to 21 points.
Simply put, when the Eagles play like this, they’re nearly impossible to beat.
Saquon Barkley House Call:
Commanders Self-Destruct Early
Washington came into the game hoping rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels could make history as the first rookie QB to lead his team to a Super Bowl. While Daniels flashed his potential with 255 total yards and two touchdowns, his teammates didn’t rise to the occasion.
The Commanders shot themselves in the foot repeatedly, starting with two first-half fumbles that gave Philadelphia short fields and easy points. Dyami Brown’s fumble, forced by Eagles linebacker Zack Baun, set up Barkley’s second touchdown. Then, Jeremy McNichols’ kickoff return blunder led to an A.J. Brown score just before halftime, putting the Eagles up 27-12.
Washington kept it close with creative play-calling and gutsy conversions but couldn’t overcome their mistakes.
Eagles Takeover in the Second Half
Any hopes of a Commanders comeback were dashed in the second half. Washington’s Austin Ekeler fumbled late in the third quarter, giving Philly another short field. Hurts capitalized with his signature “tush push” sneak, extending the Eagles’ lead to 41-23.
From there, it was a celebration for the home team. Barkley added his third touchdown of the day in the fourth quarter, and backup running back Will Shipley put the cherry on top with a late two-yard score.
The Eagles turned what could have been a close game into a laugher, thanks in large part to Washington’s four turnovers.
Looking Ahead to the Super Bowl
Philadelphia has been here before. They won their first Super Bowl seven years ago, defeating Tom Brady and the Patriots. Two years ago, they fell short against the Kansas City Chiefs. Now, they’ll have another shot to hoist the Lombardi Trophy.
With Hurts playing at an MVP level, Barkley shredding defenses, and a defense that thrives on creating chaos, the Eagles have all the pieces to finish the job.
Final Stats
Commanders
- Total Offense: 350 yards
- Jayden Daniels: 29/48, 255 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT; 6 rushes, 48 yards, 1 TD
- Zach Ertz: 11 catches, 104 yards
- Terry McLaurin: 3 catches, 51 yards, 1 TD
Eagles
- Total Offense: 459 yards

- Saquon Barkley: 15 rushes, 118 yards, 3 TD

The Eagles are peaking at the perfect time. With one game left, they’ll aim to cap off their storybook season with another championship. If they play anything like they did against Washington, it’s hard to see anyone stopping them.
