Chiefs Penalties Myth

The Chiefs’ “Ref Advantage” is a myth so Eagles fans can stop complaining and hope the Birds play smarter in Super Bowl LIX

Every year, as the Kansas City Chiefs march through the playoffs, the same tired accusations pop up: “The refs are rigging it for Mahomes!” “Kansas City always gets the calls!” “The NFL wants the Chiefs to win!”

Trust me, I love a good conspiracy, but this isn’t one of them.

Chiefs and penalties have become the NFL’s version of Bigfoot—a myth people desperately want to believe, no matter how much evidence suggests otherwise. And yes, while the Chiefs’ opponents have been flagged more often than Kansas City during their three straight Super Bowl runs, the reality is a lot less scandalous than the internet would have you think.

Let’s break it down.

Are the Chiefs Really Getting Favorable Calls?

In nine playoff games over the last three seasons, KC opponents have committed 61 accepted penalties (plus four declined), while Kansas City has only 35 accepted penalties (plus eight declined).

At first glance, that’s a pretty big gap.

However, when you compare it to other elite teams in the same stretch, things even out:

Penalties: Chiefs vs Other Notable Teams

TeamOpponent PenaltiesOpponent YardsPenaltiesYardsOpp DeclinedDeclined

Ravens6.340.33.724.00.70.3
Eagles6.245.55.086.80.30.3

Bills4.632.64.030.40.20.8

So yeah, the Chiefs benefit from more penalties on their opponents. But they’re not alone.

  • Baltimore? Almost identical.
  • Cincinnati? Not far off.
  • Philadelphia? Even better at drawing flags, thanks in part to the Brotherly Shove drawing a handful of defensive offsides calls every game.

Meanwhile, San Francisco and Buffalo don’t get many calls in their favor at all—but that’s a reflection of play style and coaching, not some vast NFL conspiracy.

Mahomes Isn’t the Reason for the Penalty Gap

If the “Chiefs get all the calls” narrative were true, you’d expect Patrick Mahomes to be at the center of it. But here’s a stat that blows that theory apart:

  • More than half (32 of 61) of the penalties called on Chiefs opponents happened when Mahomes WASN’T EVEN ON THE FIELD.

So unless Mahomes has figured out how to Jedi-mind-trick offensive linemen into holding or receivers into false starts while he’s standing on the sideline, it’s safe to say this isn’t about some star treatment from the refs.

Want to Beat the Chiefs? Stop Beating Yourself.

There’s a common denominator in all of this: the teams that don’t make mistakes in big moments are the ones that win.

Look at Mahomes’ four Super Bowls:

  • The team with fewer penalties won three times—including Tampa Bay in 2020 when Mahomes got demolished.
  • The fourth game was a tie in penalties.

In his six AFC Championship Games, the winning team committed fewer penalties four times.

What does that tell us? Playing clean football wins games. The Chiefs aren’t winning because of officiating; they’re winning because they don’t beat themselves, and their opponents do.

Stop Complaining. Start Competing.

If you want to take down the Chiefs, whining about the refs isn’t the way to do it. Avoid dumb penalties. Keep your offensive line disciplined. Play smart situational football.

Or, keep committing false starts, holding penalties, and unnecessary roughness, and then get mad when Mahomes makes you pay for it.

The Chiefs don’t need the refs to win games—their opponents are doing the job for them.
