Sixers sleepwalk through another embarrassment, fall to the lowly Pistons 125-112
The Sixers had a chance to come out and take care of business against a shorthanded Detroit Pistons squad missing its best player, Cade Cunningham. Instead, they mailed it in for the first half and got thoroughly embarrassed, dropping a 125-112 loss that felt way worse than the score suggests.
And if you’re looking for a culprit, I regret to inform you that it started and ended with Joel Embiid’s first half performance, which was arguably one of the WORST two quarters of basketball he’s ever played.
Sixers were down 49-78 at halftime…
Joel Embiid a Complete No-Show First Half
If there’s one thing that should be easy for Embiid right now, it’s caring when he gets on the floor. The guy has barely played this season. Every game should feel like an opportunity to set a tone, build chemistry, and remind everyone why he’s still one of the most dominant forces in basketball.
Instead, he sleepwalked through the first 24 minutes like he’d rather be anywhere else.
- Flat-footed on the glass.
- Multiple Pistons offensive rebounds off missed free throws.
- Lazy fouls.
- Jogging in transition.
- Defense was clearly optional.
Embiid shot 1-for-9 in the first half, fumbling around with the basketball like it was a foreign object, and somehow looked even worse on defense.
The Pistons aren’t exactly the 2017 Warriors, but you wouldn’t know it watching how easily they carved up the Sixers in the first half. Detroit got whatever shot they wanted because their best player was standing around meandering through possessions with a mopey look on his face.
We’ve seen misfortune hit Embiid before—injuries, bad luck, whatever—but this wasn’t bad luck. Embiid was playing horribly and it had a direct impact on the rest of the team last night. Unfortunately, even with a strong showing in the second half, there’s no excuse for this when the team entered last night 10-games under the .500 mark and trying to salvage their season.
Just really bad message to send the Sixers. Embiid is supposed to be the savior of this roster and when he puts up a performance like that, it runs toxic through the rest of the lineup.
Paul George Just Along For The Ride?
I don’t care if Podcast P is spending his free time behind a microphone, but when you’re non-existent on the basketball court and doing that, we now have issues.
Paul George isn’t shaking off rust anymore. I don’t want to hear anything about his injured pinky either. He just coasts through games, seemingly disinterested in anything that’s happening on the court. Sure, there were a few pull-up jumpers that looked nice but Tobias Harris basically owned him throughout the game last night.
Side Note: I was begging Tobias Harris to enter the locker room yelling “PAUL GEORGE OVER ME?!” reminiscent to Jimmy Butler echoing the same statement about Harris a few years back.
Anyways, Daryl Morey brought Paul George to Philly to be a difference-maker. He has been anything but that. Sure, there’s chemistry issues due to injuries plaguing this roster, but that doesn’t overshadow effort and interest in performing at the level your contract demands.
At Least The New Guy, Quentin Grimes Looks Like He Gives a Damn, Right?
The only real bright spot in this mess was Quentin Grimes, who made his Sixers debut and immediately looked like a guy who wants to contribute.
He came in with active hands on defense, knocked down a smooth catch-and-shoot three, and actually looked like he wanted to be on the court. Unlike half the roster, he wasn’t playing with the attitude of a team that’s already accomplished something.

Pairing him with Tyrese Maxey or Jared McCain in the backcourt next season is intriguing but when you take a look at the overall issues on this roster, if the culture in this locker room doesn’t change, why would Grimes even want to stick around?
This Team’s Arrogance Is Completely Undeserved
Now 11-games under the .500 mark, the arrogance of the Philadelphia 76ers is honestly disgusting to watch. The defense is horrible. They stop NO ONE in transition and somehow, the manage to give up fast break points off made baskets.

It’s truly remarkable how little the Sixers seemingly care about playing basketball. They play like they have absolutely nothing to prove while fans know it’s the complete opposite.
You can’t just “flip a switch” in the second half of a basketball game. It didn’t even work against the Pistons let alone an actual playoff team. Let’s all just hope that this was a wakeup call but given the consistent arrogance, I have serious doubts that will be the case.
What’s Next?
Daryl Morey somehow believes this team is a “contender”. That might have been true if they weren’t putting up performances like last night with a “healthy” roster. Instead, we all watched a team with no identity and no sense of urgency. The Sixers are completely unserious and last night showed a laundry list of reasons why.
What an embarrassment. The Sixers, even if they do squeak into the playoffs, are basically dead men walking already. They will be lucky if any fans actually stick around to watch the execution awaiting in the playoffs.
