Saquon Barkley sets record for most rushing yards in an NFL season

All year, we heard about Saquon Barkley chasing history—and while Eric Dickerson’s single-season rushing record will live another year, Barkley still managed to carve out his own legendary season.

If you break it down, that’s 119.2 rushing yards per game over a full 20-game stretch. He carried the ball 345 times in the regular season and added another 91 in four playoff games, averaging 5.74 yards per carry.

Saquon Barkley vs. Terrell Davis: The Context

To put this into perspective, Barkley just shattered Terrell Davis’ 1998 record of 2,476 yards, which was the previous high-water mark when including the playoffs.

• Terrell Davis: 2,476 rushing yards on 470 carries (5.27 YPC)
• Saquon Barkley: 2,504 rushing yards on 436 carries (5.74 YPC)

Barkley ran for more yards on fewer carries, and while the Chiefs defense bottled him up in the Super Bowl, that didn’t stop the Eagles from dropping 40 points on the reigning champs.

Even Without a Big Game, Barkley Made His Impact

On paper, 25 carries for 57 yards isn’t what we expected from Saquon Barkley in the Super Bowl. He never ripped off a signature run, but he found other ways to contribute:

• Led the team with six receptions (40 yards)
• Picked up blitzes all game to give Hurts time to operate
• Caught a key sideline pass that helped Philly bleed nearly seven minutes off the clock on their first drive of the second half

Saquon Barkley did what great players do in big games—he found a way to help, even without the big stat line. And now, just one year after arriving in Philadelphia, he’s got a ring to go with his historic season.
