Jalen Hurts named Philadelphia Citizen of the Year for his impact off the field

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was honored as the Philadelphia Citizen of the Year at Tuesday night’s annual awards ceremony, recognizing his contributions to the community beyond the football field. The event, hosted by The Philadelphia Citizen at the Fitler Club, celebrated ten Philadelphians whose work has made a significant impact in the city.

Jalen Hurts Honored for Community Leadership

Hurts, joined by his fiancée Bry Burrows, received the prestigious Citizen of the Year Award from Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro. The governor praised Hurts not only for his athletic excellence but also for his commitment to mentoring young people and fostering opportunities for future generations.

“Jalen and Bry understand the importance of taking young athletes, young individuals in our communities and giving them strong mentors so they continue to walk a path that is true and just,” Shapiro said.

The Jalen Hurts Foundation: Giving Back to Philadelphia

Through the Jalen Hurts Foundation, the Eagles’ star quarterback has dedicated himself to supporting youth, education, and sports initiatives in Philadelphia. One of his recent contributions includes donating air conditioning units to local schools, ensuring a better learning environment for students. His foundation continues to be a driving force in providing resources and opportunities for underserved communities.

“What I strive to do is just serve, mentor, progress, give people opportunities that they don’t even know that they have,” Hurts said during his acceptance speech. He also encouraged others to take an active role in uplifting their communities.

“Push that person next to you, continue to have that drive, continue to have that effort, and bring someone with you,” Hurts urged the audience.

The Citizen of the Year Awards also honored individuals who have made a lasting impact in their respective fields. Declan Cassidy, named Youth Citizen of the Year, founded Socks for the Streets, a nonprofit that has distributed nearly 80,000 socks to those experiencing homelessness.

Former Pennsylvania Governor and Philadelphia Mayor Ed Rendell presented the Lifetime Achievement Award for Civic Engagement to Larry Magid and Judith M. von Seldeneck, recognizing their long-standing contributions to the city.

As Jalen Hurts continues to lead the Eagles on the field, his dedication to making a difference in Philadelphia shows that his impact extends far beyond the game. His leadership, both as an athlete and as a role model, is a testament to what it means to be a true Citizen of the Year.
