Kyle Schwarber gives the perfect nickname to Phillies prospect Gabriel Rincones Jr: “Uncle Rico”

If you’re not watching Phillies Spring Training, you’re missing out on a show—and the headliner is Gabriel Rincones Jr. This dude is absolutely raking, launching three homers already, and each one has been a no-doubt, moonshot.

And now, he’s got a nickname to match his moonshots. Enter Kyle Schwarber.

Kyle Schwarber calls Gabriel Rincones Jr “Uncle Rico” in Interview with The Inky

According to Alex Coffey of the Inquirer, Schwarber was shagging balls in the outfield a few weeks ago when some unknown minor-leaguer stepped into the cage. Ball after ball left the yard. Left field, center field, right field—it didn’t matter.

The kid was spraying absolute piss missiles all over the place.

Schwarber had to know who the hell was doing this and possibly felt his Schwarbomb legacy threatened, so he decided to check-in with Kevin Long to figure out what he was seeing.

Long told Schwarber to go talk to the kid, named Gabriel Rincones Jr, so that’s exactly what happened. Shortly after, “Uncle Rico” was born.

“Oh, Uncle Rico here, making us look like nothing,” Schwarber joked.

The reference is obviously from the legendary Uncle Rico in Napoleon Dynamite—a man so confident in his arm that he once claimed that he could throw a football over them mountains.

Clearly, the only difference is that Rincones isn’t talking about throwing footballs over mountains. He’s literally crushing baseballs into the stands all over Florida during Phillies’ Spring Training.

Kyle Schwarber doubled down on the nickname later:

“I call him Uncle Rico because he can hit the ball over the mountains.”

When will Phillies fans see Gabriel Rincones Jr in South Philly?

If Rincones keeps mashing like this, Phillies fans are gonna need to remain on high alert at Citizens Bank Park sooner than later. It’s only a matter of time before Uncle Rico steps into the box at Citizens Bank Park and sends one into orbit.

Given the Phillies outfield situation and lack of depth on the bench, there’s a good chance we see that this year and if/when that happens, start the parade down Broad Street.

We already saw what he’s capable of last year when he hit a ball 506 feet in Reading last year.
