Philly Reunion: Former Eagles DT is set to be a free agent, team could buy low to bring him back

Former Eagles defensive tackle Javon Hargrave is set to become a free agent this offseason, after the San Francisco 49ers announced they’re parting ways.

Could Javon Hargrave rejoin the Eagles this offseason?

While Hargrave had a decent stint in San Fran, including a Pro Bowl nod in 2023, he never reached the heights the 49ers envisioned for him when they gave him a 3-year, $84M contract. Hargrave hit his peak in Philadelphia, where he posted a career-best 11 sacks in 2022 while helping the team reach the Super Bowl.

Does a Philly reunion make sense here? It really only makes sense if the team isn’t able to retain Milton Williams, who’s set to become a free agent and will likely get a hefty payday. If Williams walks, that leaves the Eagles with Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, and Moro Ojomo as the main interior defensive lineman. Even without Williams, this is a pretty solid interior rotation. Nevertheless, adding a veteran piece like Hargrave — who will be relatively cheap — would make sense.

Hargrave is a proven pass rusher at defensive tackle. Playing alongside Carter in passing situations could be lethal, considering Hargrave will probably always face one-on-ones in those scenarios.

Howie Roseman’s plan for this offseason is still up in the air. Will they prioritize keeping their pending free agents, or will they try to supplement their losses with one-year deals? It’s hard to say.

One thing is certain — Howie loves his defensive line depth. For that reason alone, Hargrave is a name worth keeping an eye on as free agency approaches.
