Griff McGarry Hidden No-Hitter

Griff McGarry is in the midst of a Hidden No-Hitter and the Phillies might have something brewing with their former top prospect

Let’s talk about one of the sneakiest storylines of the young season: Griff McGarry is literally untouchable right now.

Over two starts at Double-A Reading, Griff McGarry has been ridiculously dominant. So dominant, that opposing hitters have zero hits off him this year.

Griff McGarry and the Hidden No-Hitter

McGarry has faced 27 batters over two starts for Double-A Reading and hasn’t given up a single hit. While it might not seem like much with the Reading Fightin’ Phils. McGarry is in the midst of one of those beautiful minor league oddities—what us baseball nerds affectionately call a “hidden no-hitter.”

The Phillies’ 25-year-old righty has been dealing. Through eight innings, he’s walked just three and struck out 13. And if you know anything about McGarry’s history, that walk number is the eye-popper here.

Former top prospect Griff McGarry earns Eastern League Pitcher of the Week after dominant start in AA Reading

Last year in Triple-A Lehigh Valley, McGarry walked 36 guys in 30.2 innings.

That’s almost a walk and a half per frame. His command issues were so glaring that the Phillies bumped him back down to Double-A and moved him into a starter role again—something he hadn’t done consistently since college.

The early results suggest that might have been a genius move.

There’s obviously a long way to go here. McGarry’s been tantalizing in the past—big fastball, nasty stuff, but control that veered between “effectively wild” and “just wild.”

The difference now is that he’s finally harnessing it and if McGarry keeps this up, he won’t be in Reading much longer. It’s only April, but if you’re looking for a name to keep on your Phillies pitching radar, circle Griff McGarry in thick red ink.
