Quick thoughts, or confusion, on the latest update from Phillies and Citizens Bank Park’s food menu, which now features a new dessert called Red Velvet Affogato.

What’s Red Velvet Affogato?
I have zero clue but according to Major League Baseball, it’s a dessert that is made with red velvet cookies, vanilla ice cream, and espresso.
Why are they offering this at a baseball game? Great question, I literally have no idea.
I certainly don’t mind Citizens Bank Park attempting to offer more unique food options but I’m still in the camp that all Phillies fans really want at the ballpark is cheaper beers and the return of Dollar Dog Night.
Citizens Bank Park is better off with discounted theme nights on more “traditional” ballpark foods. Give us $3.00 slices of pizza or discounts on a burger. Hell, bring back Dollar Dog Nights and have your alcohol and drink sponsors include promotions and discounted pricing too.
Point being, we’re talking baseball here, folks. This isn’t a gourmet food festival. I’m sure that’s delicious but there’s nothing better than eating ice cream out of a mini-Phillies helmet and if you’re really feeling yourself, ordering some cotton candy.
Do we really need to eat Red Velvet Affogato while Brandon Marsh and Alec Bohm are hitless every night at the plate and Jose Alvarado is putting a crowd of 40,000+ through an emotional blender in the 9th inning?
My opinion, is a hard no. I’m not even sure the thought behind it. Is the Phillies Marketing team thinking that offering this type of stuff will put more asses in the seats at The Bank? That can’t be it. They already have sold out games on a nightly basis and plenty of food options available. I’m not even sure what type of baseball fan Red Velvet Affogato is supposed to be attracting?
Seems like it’s a bit “out of touch” but of course, eat whatever you want. Just don’t turn to me and ask for more arm room so you can properly eat this in the bottom of the 9th inning with Citizens Bank Park going absolutely nuts while Bryce Harper steps up to the plate with a chance to walk it off.
