Former Philadelphia 76ers NBA Rookie of the Year Michael Carter-Williams set to launch boxing career

From NBA Rookie of the Year to… the Broad Street Brawl? Michael Carter-Williams is stepping into the boxing ring next month in New York City.

Uprising Promotions announced the former Sixers guard will make his amateur boxing debut on May 29 at an event that, fittingly, is called the Broad Street Brawl.

You couldn’t script it better if you tried.

The 33-year-old Michael Carter-Williams hasn’t been in the NBA since the 2022-23 season with the Orlando Magic and just wrapped a short G League stint in Mexico City. Now, he’s shifting from dropping dimes to throwing jabs.

Say what you will about the guy’s NBA career, but you’ve got to respect the pivot. A decade after torching LeBron, Wade, and Bosh in his Sixers debut with a near quadruple-double, he’s taking his talents to the squared circle.

Michael Carter-Williams’ first game in the NBA was damn near folklore:

22 points, 7 boards, 12 assists, 9 steals… against the defending champion Miami Heat. That’s one of the greatest debuts in league history. He won Rookie of the Year, then quickly faded out of national relevance like most Sixers from the early Process years.

Now he’s entering a ring where fading isn’t an option — unless you’re dodging a right hook.

The Tale of the Tape:

  • Height: 6-foot-5
  • Weight: 190 lbs
  • Reach: Unknown, but probably solid
  • Previous opponents: Dwyane Wade, Jimmy Butler, career expectations

No word yet on who he’ll face in the ring, but please, do not give this man Nate Robinson’s phone number. We don’t need another NBA-to-boxing tragedy.

One more thing — it’s called the Broad Street Brawl. That’s poetry. That’s branding. That’s a flyer we want framed. If MCW walks out to “Dreams and Nightmares” in throwback black-and-red Sixers shorts, cancel the main event — we’ve already won.

In a world where NBA players flirt with podcasting, crypto scams, or WWE cameos, this is the career swerve we didn’t see coming but fully embrace. From nearly posting a quadruple-double in his debut, to suiting up for the Bulls, Bucks, Rockets, Magic, and Capitanes, Michael Carter-Williams is now chasing an entirely different kind of belt.
