Nick Castellanos didn’t homer after Pope’s death, but he did enjoy an Uncrustable in the dugout

Nick Castellanos didn’t deliver the viral moment the internet was hoping for Monday night — at least not the one everyone expected.

After the passing of Pope Francis, the baseball world braced for what’s become a morbid tradition: a Nick Castellanos home run following a tragic news event. It’s happened so often it’s basically canon at this point. But instead of delivering a timely bomb, Castellanos went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts as the Phillies dropped a brutal 5-4 loss to the Mets in Queens.

The bat was quiet. The snack game, however? That was elite.

With the Phillies trailing 2-0 in the seventh and Alec Bohm stepping to the plate, the SNY broadcast caught Castellanos mid-snack — leaning over the dugout railing, casually housing a Smucker’s Uncrustable.

Respect.

For the unfamiliar, an Uncrustable is a crustless peanut butter and jelly sandwich typically enjoyed by children — or, apparently, All-Star outfielders trying to rally the troops. It sparked a hilarious moment on the Mets broadcast as the announcers tried to ID the mysterious snack in real-time. Some players dig into scouting reports. Castellanos digs into pre-sealed PB&Js.

But while the snack may have filled his stomach, it didn’t fill the Phillies’ scoreboard.

Castellanos flew out in his final at-bat, stranding Kyle Schwarber, and the Phillies’ late ninth-inning rally came up just short. Edwin Diaz slammed the door by striking out both Turner and Harper to end it, handing the Phils their second straight L and giving the Mets a three-game cushion in the NL East.

The silver lining? At least someone was enjoying themselves while the Phillies embarrassed themselves against their most hated rival. And in true Castellanos fashion, he managed to steal the spotlight — even if it wasn’t with his bat this time.

Up next, Cristopher Sanchez takes the mound Tuesday as the Phillies look to stop the bleeding. But if things go south again, at least we know Nick Castellanos will have his Uncrustables on standby.
