Phillies reportedly showing interest in CPBL RHP Hsu Jo-Hsi
Hsu Jo-Hsi is up next. It’s officially that time of year where the Phillies start scouring the globe for pitching depth — and according to reports out of Taiwan, they’ve got their eyes on a new arm.
Per a recent Yahoo Sports Taiwan report, the Phillies are among the MLB teams showing interest in 24-year-old right-handed pitcher Hsu Jo-Hsi (徐若熙), currently dominating in the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL).

The article notes that Hsu — who pitches for the Wei Chuan Dragons — has emerged as one of the top international pitching targets for teams looking to add young arms. Phillies’ scouts, along with scouts from other MLB clubs, have reportedly been keeping close tabs on him.
And there’s a lot to like:
- Age: Only 24
- Fastball: Mid-to-high 90s
- Control: Regarded as one of the best command pitchers in the CPBL
- Track record: International experience, including time representing Taiwan at major tournaments
The Wei Chuan Dragons’ general manager Wang Jin-Yong spoke publicly and didn’t shy away from confirming that Hsu Jo-Hsi and fellow pitcher Wang Yao-Lin are at the top of their list of potential players who could make the jump to Major League Baseball by the end of this year.
Wang noted that both players are expected to be prioritized for international opportunities once their CPBL commitments are completed, and that the organization fully supports them making the move abroad when the timing is right.
“At the end of the year, if players have the opportunity to pursue MLB dreams, we fully support them,” Wang said.
Why would the Phillies care?
Simple — this organization needs to rebuild the pitching depth pipeline, and the search for the next wave of controllable arms has to go beyond the U.S. college and minor league ranks. Signing a 24-year-old international pitcher with electric stuff and a starter profile? That’s low risk, high reward.
Especially considering the state of the current Phillies rotation and bullpen depth — it’s clear Dave Dombrowski and the front office aren’t leaving any stone unturned.
Hsu Jo-Hsi would not only add another legitimate prospect to the system, but could also slot into a Double-A or Triple-A role immediately, with the upside of reaching the Majors sooner rather than later if his stuff translates.
A few quick notes on Hsu Jo-Hsi:
- Great fastball life with a tight slider and developing changeup.
- Pitches with advanced feel — not a wild thrower.
- Has big-game experience internationally — doesn’t shy away from pressure moments.
If the Phillies can land Hsu Jo-Hsi, it would be another smart, forward-thinking move to bolster an area that could make or break them in future seasons. It’s not a huge splash, but these are the kinds of investments that quietly build championship-level depth over time.
Stay tuned — this could get real interesting after the CPBL season wraps up later this year.
