Phillies trade Kody Clemens to Twins for Cash Considerations

Today, the Phillies officially announced they’ve traded infielder Kody Clemens to the Minnesota Twins in exchange for cash considerations, wrapping up what felt inevitable after Clemens was designated for assignment earlier this week.

This is Minnesota’s second scoop off the DFA scrap heap in a matter of days. They recently grabbed Jonah Bride from the Marlins, and now they snag Clemens — a move made even more urgent after rookie second baseman Luke Keaschall fractured his arm last night. Brutal timing for the Twins, but a little opportunity for Clemens.

Kody Clemens’ Time in Philly

Let’s be honest: Clemens never really found a home in Philadelphia. He was part of the Gregory Soto/Matt Vierling trade heading into 2023 and spent most of his Phillies career bouncing between Triple-A Lehigh Valley and the big-league bench.

This year, he made the Opening Day roster because Weston Wilson got hurt, but Clemens barely touched the field — just six plate appearances, no starts. With no minor league options left, it was either keep burning a roster spot or cut bait. The Phillies chose Door No. 2.

Across parts of four MLB seasons, Clemens has a rough career slash line of .197/.244/.367. In Triple-A, though, he’s shown some life, hitting .259/.331/.507 across almost 1,300 plate appearances.

Fresh Start in Minnesota

Clemens actually fits pretty well with the Twins. Between injuries to Willi Castro and now Keaschall, the Twins need warm, healthy bodies who can play multiple spots. Clemens won’t be asked to carry the offense, but he can plug in at second, third, first, or a corner outfield spot if needed.

It’s hard to imagine Clemens becoming a regular starter in Minnesota, but at least he’ll get a better shot at actual at-bats instead of rotting on the bench like he was in Philly.

Big Picture for the Phillies

No huge shock here. Cash considerations is basically GM-speak for “please just take this guy.” With Weston Wilson back and players like Edmundo Sosa and Kody Clemens filling similar roles, there simply wasn’t any room.

The real focus now is on getting the big bats back on track and hoping this team stops sleepwalking at the plate before the hole they’re digging gets any deeper.

Kody Clemens Trade Notes:

  • Kody Clemens traded to the Twins for cash.
  • Phillies clear a roster spot.
  • Clemens gets a fresh start where he might actually play.
  • Phillies keep it moving toward more important things.
