John Kruk MLB Umpire Uniforms

WATCH: John Kruk weighs in on the MLB Umpire pleated pant debate

John Kruk opened the doors on the ongoing discussion about MLB umpires needing a wardrobe overhaul last night as the Phillies steamrolled the Washington Nationals down at Citizens Bank Park.

John Kruk’s stance was pretty simple. Too many pleats. Too much polyester. Not enough modern flair. While I typically hop on board the Kruk Train, there’s absolutely no way I could get behind a wardrobe upgrade for MLB umpires.

Apparently, the push now is to throw them in joggers, quarter-zips, and sneakers like they’re doing laps at the mall instead of calling a ballgame. If we’re being honest, that would be a massive downgrade for a position built on presence, authority, and tradition.

“You know what, John. You’re right!” 😂 John Kruk is in all favor of umpires upgrading their fashion attire.

The Perfect Umpire Uniform would be Metal Robot Themed

If umpires are going to stick around in this league—and not be replaced entirely by iPads and strike zone robots—then they better look like they belong on the field. And that means keeping the uniform exactly the way it is: dark pants, sturdy shoes, tucked-in shirts, and yes, pleats.

This isn’t your weekend beer league. MLB umpires are still in charge of managing the game. They’re the ones handling confrontations with players, enforcing rules, and keeping order when benches clear or tempers flare. You can’t be doing all that while looking like a JV assistant coach who just got back from Chipotle.

Baseball is a game that thrives on routine, structure, and aesthetic. The timelessness of it all is part of the charm. The green grass, the white chalk lines, the crisp gray road uniforms, and the black-and-blue umpire fits that have looked nearly the same since before your grandfather knew what a split-finger fastball was.

And let’s be real—this job isn’t easy. They’re crouching behind home plate for three and a half hours in the dead of summer. They’re sprinting up the first base line, ducking line drives, and navigating hostile crowds. If anything, they deserve more respect for doing all of that while dressed like funeral directors.

Side Note: I despise MLB Umpires and it hurts to be on their side in this argument but if nothing, I’m always honest and clear about where I stand.

So no, we don’t need robot umpires in NASA suits or middle-aged men dressed like they’re coaching AAU. We need umps to keep looking like umps. The outfit matters. It sets the tone. If you want to inject more comfort, sure—get them better fabric, better airflow, even some upgraded shoes. But don’t take away the professional look just because the NBA and NFL have gone full leisurewear.

Umpires are part of the show. Their presence is still essential—at least for now. And if they’re going to keep playing that role, they need to look the part. Keep the uniforms. Keep the pants. Keep the dignity.
