Kyle Schwarber stays hot, Phillies cruise to 7-2 win over Nationals

Make it four straight for the Fightins. Kyle Schwarber wasted no time putting the Phillies on the board Wednesday night, launching a three-run missile in the first inning off Jake Irvin to pace Philly to a 7-2 win over the Nationals.

The bomb was Kyle Schwarber’s second first-inning homer in as many nights, his ninth of the year, and it extended his MLB-best on-base streak to 36 games dating back to last season.

Cristopher Sánchez looked healthy and mostly sharp in his return from forearm tightness, going five innings and giving up just two runs while striking out six. He capped his outing with a strikeout of Nathaniel Lowe, who had doubled earlier and came up in the fifth with two men on — the game still within reach at that point. Big-time pitch, big-time moment.

Philly’s lineup kept the pressure on throughout. Max Kepler added a solo shot in the sixth (his third of the season), J.T. Realmuto followed with a moonshot of his own in the eighth, and Bryson Stott plus Nick Castellanos chipped in with RBI singles. It was one of those nights where the bats did their job, the pitching held up, and the Phillies looked like the team they’re supposed to be.

Game Notes:

Washington rookie Dylan Crews is now 13-for-31 in strikeouts this year just against the Phillies. He’s struck out three times in each of the last two games.
