Phillies can’t close the door, fall 11-9 in extras as D-Backs salvage series finale
The Phillies had their shot to break out the brooms on Sunday afternoon. Instead, they got swept aside in extras.
Despite a furious late-inning comeback, Josh Naylor’s RBI single in the 10th lifted the Arizona Diamondbacks to an 11-9 win over the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park, snapping Philly’s three-game win streak and denying them a weekend sweep.
Arizona jumped all over Ranger Suárez in his season debut, tagging the lefty for seven runs in 3.2 innings. It was a tough return to the mound for Suárez, who had missed the season’s first month with lower back tightness. The D-backs racked up seven hits in that span, including a two-run double by Jose Herrera and a bases-clearing triple by Geraldo Perdomo.
By the fifth inning, it was 7-2 Arizona. The game looked over but the Phillies didn’t go quietly.
Weston Wilson got the rally started with a three-run blast in the sixth — his first homer of the season — cutting the lead to two.

Then in the bottom of the ninth, down 8-6 with two outs, Kyle Schwarber cranked his 11th homer of the year, extending his on-base streak to 40 games and putting the Phils within one.

Singles from Nick Castellanos, J.T. Realmuto, and Alec Bohm followed, tying it at 8-8 and sending it to extras. Schwarber’s homer was off Shelby Miller, who hadn’t allowed an earned run all season until that swing.

Arizona Punches Back in the 10th
The momentum didn’t last. In the top of the 10th, Arizona capitalized on a shaky outing from José Alvarado. After Eugenio Suárez was placed on second via the ghost runner rule, Naylor punched a single into left for the go-ahead run. The D-backs added two more on a Tim Tawa sac fly and a Perdomo bases-loaded walk.
The Phillies scraped one back in the bottom half on a Max Kepler sac fly, but Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber couldn’t deliver the big hit. Harper flied out. Schwarber grounded out.
Game over.
Phillies Game Notes:
- Bryce Harper homered in the first, his sixth of the year.

- Phillies relievers allowed four runs over the final two innings.
- Arizona improved to 8-3 in series finales, including wins in 7 of their last 8.
- Schwarber’s 40-game on-base streak continues to lead the majors.
Up Next for the Phillies
The Phillies have Monday off before hitting the road for a three-game set against the Tampa Bay Rays. Zack Wheeler (2-1, 3.48 ERA) gets the ball Tuesday against Drew Rasmussen (1-2, 2.64 ERA).
The Diamondbacks return to Arizona to host the New York Mets, with Ryne Nelson replacing Corbin Burnes, who’s skipping a turn due to shoulder inflammation.
