Matvei Michkov Goals Teenager NHL

Disgusting Behavior: Matvei Michkov snubbed from Calder finalists

What a joke. Matvei Michkov wasn’t just one of the best rookies in the NHL this season — he was the best in a lot of the categories that actually matter. And yet, when the Calder Trophy finalists were announced Monday, Michkov’s name was nowhere to be found.

Instead, the NHL’s top rookie honor will be decided between Lane Hutson, Macklin Celebrini, and Dustin Wolf. Respectfully, (not really) what are we doing here?

Matvei Michkov’s rookie résumé is a no-brainer:

  • Most goals by a rookie (26)
  • Most even-strength points by a rookie (46)
  • Tied for second in total points (63)
  • Played 80 of 82 games
  • Led all Flyers in goals
  • Second on the team in points behind Travis Konecny

He also added three overtime winners and three shootout goals — no other player in the league did both. And he did it all at 20 years old, adjusting to the North American game and lifestyle after jumping straight from Russia to the NHL.

Flyers slide to No. 6 in NHL Draft Lottery, the maximum possible fall

This wasn’t just a promising season — this was legit star-level production. He didn’t do it on a powerhouse team either. He did it on a flawed Flyers squad scraping its way through a rebuild and still outshined everyone.

The Alternatives

Yes, Lane Hutson had a phenomenal year. Sixty-six points as a rookie defenseman is absurd, and the Canadiens’ playoff push probably helped his case.

Macklin Celebrini? Also great.

Same number of points as Matvei Michkov (63), but he played in 10 fewer games and finished minus-31 (Michkov was minus-18).

Dustin Wolf was a good goalie on a decent team that didn’t even make the playoffs.

Sorry NHL but you can’t lead all rookies in goals, dominate at even strength, show up in the clutch, and not even be named a finalist. Last year’s Calder winner, Connor Bedard, won it with fewer goals (22) and fewer points (61) in fewer games played (68) — with a worse plus-minus (minus-44).

Where’s the consistency?

The Flyers Calder Curse

Let’s not forget — no Flyers player has ever won the Calder Trophy. Not Eric Lindros. Not Claude Giroux. Not even Mike Richards or Jeff Carter. And now we’re adding Matvei Michkov to the list of greats who’ve been overlooked?

It’s baffling. It’s maddening. And honestly, it’s exhausting.

Teammates and GM Get It

They see it. Fans see it. The stats back it up. The league just… missed. Again.

Matvei Michkov isn’t just one of the best young players in the NHL — he’s one of the most electrifying. The voters might have overlooked him this year, but if this snub does anything, it should only fire him up for what’s next.

He’s 20 years old. He just torched NHL defenses for 63 points in his first season. And you left him off the ballot? Good luck with that next season.
