Brandon Marsh, Trea Turner deliver in extras as Phillies complete sweep of the Rays, 7-6
Don’t look now, but the Phillies are heating up, and what would you know, they’ve got a flair for the dramatic. Back in the day, we even used to switch up their name and call them The Fightins.
This time around, Brandon Marsh and Trea Turner came through in the clutch Thursday night, each driving in a run in the 10th inning to help the Phillies erase a four-run deficit and complete a three-game sweep of the slumping Rays, 7-6, at Steinbrenner Field.
With the win, the Phils have now taken 9 of their last 11 and continue to surge through May. This one didn’t come easy — but it sure was satisfying.
The Fightins
Trailing 5-1 entering the 8th, Bryson Stott ignited the comeback with a three-run blast off Edwin Uceta, his second hit of the night, to pull the Phillies within one.

In the 9th, Kyle Schwarber led off with a single to extend his on-base streak to 43 games. Pinch-runner Johan Rojas came on, and chaos followed. Rays closer Pete Fairbanks uncorked a wild pickoff attempt that let Rojas fly to third, setting up a game-tying RBI groundout by Max Kepler.
In extras, the Phillies wasted no time. Marsh laced a leadoff double to score Edmundo Sosa, and two batters later, Turner punched a single up the middle to make it 7-5.
Pitching Notes
Jesús Luzardo’s night started shaky — Junior Caminero took him deep in the first, snapping Luzardo’s 40.1-inning homerless streak. Still, the lefty battled through five innings of one-run ball before the bullpen took over.
The usually reliable Jose Alvarado had to dance out of trouble in the 9th. After Taylor Walls singled, JT Realmuto threw him out trying to steal second — a close call upheld on review that kept the game tied and set the table for the 10th.
Matt Strahm got the save despite allowing a run in the 10th. He stranded the tying run on second to secure the win.
After Tampa Bay tied the game in the 7th with a three-run bomb by Yandy DÃaz, the Phillies didn’t fold. Stott’s homer in the 8th gave them life. Then in the 10th, Brandon Marsh’s double and Turner’s single put Philly on top for good.
Brandon Marsh. One Pitch. The Fightins Comeback.
Up Next…Cleveland
The Phillies head to Cleveland for a weekend series against the Guardians. Aaron Nola (1-5, 4.61 ERA) gets the ball Friday looking to rebound from a rough start. The Rays, meanwhile, will try to stop the bleeding against Milwaukee.
Phillies Game Notes:
- Marsh and Turner each had two hits and an RBI.
- Schwarber’s on-base streak is now the longest active streak in MLB at 43 games.
- The Phillies are now 4-0 in extra innings this season.
- Tampa Bay has lost seven straight at home.
The Phillies came from behind, showed resilience, and got timely hits from guys all over the lineup. This team’s got juice right now, and The Fightins are looking strong as they roll into a weekend series in Cleveland.
