Kyle Schwarber launches 300th career home run, Phillies storm back against Rockies
The Phillies are back on top in the NL East, and Kyle Schwarber made sure the whole damn stadium knew it.
Kyle Schwarber obliterated the 300th home run of his career — a 466-foot missile into the Colorado night — as the Phillies stormed back to beat the Rockies 9-3 on Monday at Coors Field.
It was a vintage Schwarbomb, landing high off the third deck in right, and it helped cap off a late-inning offensive eruption that turned a 3-1 deficit into a blowout win.
Kyle Schwarber Career No. 300
Alec Bohm delivered the go-ahead shot, a two-run homer in the eighth that gave the Phillies a 4-3 lead and flipped the game on its head.
Trea Turner followed with a two-run double, and the Phillies didn’t stop there — Schwarber and Edmundo Sosa added ninth-inning homers for good measure, turning Coors into a launching pad and the Rockies bullpen into batting practice.
Sosa finished with four hits, including his first homer of the season. Bryce Harper had two RBIs, including a sacrifice fly that trimmed Colorado’s lead in the seventh. The Phillies have now won four straight and leapfrogged the Mets to reclaim first place in the NL East for the first time since April 12.
Cristopher Sánchez gave Philly six strong innings, allowing three runs — two of them driven in by Rockies shortstop Ezequiel Tovar.
Joe Ross (2-1) got the win in relief. On the other side, Rockies starter Kyle Freeland pitched well but was left with nothing to show for it, thanks to a bullpen collapse that matched Colorado’s historic level of futility.
The Rockies are now 8-39. That’s the worst 47-game start in the modern era (since 1901). That’s “you’re-on-pace-for-123-losses” bad.
What’s Next
The Phillies will try to make it five in a row Tuesday night. Jesús Luzardo (4-0, 2.00 ERA) takes the mound for the Phils against Colorado’s Antonio Senzatela (1-7, 6.39 ERA). Based on the numbers, Philly might want to bring extra bats.
