Skinny Joey Merlino Angelos Cheesesteaks

Skinny Joey Merlino ripped into Angelo’s owner Danny DiGiampietro and apparently it was so bad, Philly Mag refused to print what was said

Finally, some fire in the cheesesteak world. No more “best of” lists or fake humble bragging. In an interview with Philly Mag, Skinny Joey Merlino made it loud and clear that he’s not just entering the cheesesteak game, he’s declaring war.

The former Philly mob boss turned podcast host and cheesesteak shop owner has officially claimed that his joint, Skinny Joey’s is the best in the city.

Naturally, Philly Mag writer Victor Fiorillo followed up and asked him about Angelo’s cheesesteaks, also located in South Philly, that has been blowing up on social media lately.

Skinny Joey Merlino when asked about Angelo’s…

What is the second-best cheesesteak in Philly? The current viral sensation is Angelo’s. What’s your review?

I’ve never been to Angelo’s. And I’m never setting foot in Angelo’s. [At this point, Merlino goes into a long and winding and profanity-filled tirade about Angelo’s owner Danny DiGiampietro that, for the sake of length and out of legal concerns, we’ll leave between the two of them.]

What a missed opportunity by Philly Mag

You mean to tell me that Skinny Joey Merlino delivered a profanity-filled tirade about Angelo’s owner Danny DiGiampietro and Philly Mag decided to not report on any of it?

What a journalistic failure. This could have been the spark that has been desperately missing from the on-going, typically-boring debate over cheesesteaks that has plagued the city of Philadelphia for years.

Who knows? Maybe this still can serve as a much-needed turning point.

Skinny Joey Merlino trashing Angelo’s can reignite everything. We’re talking a new turf war between Pat’s and Genos and the potential of an all-out brawl between Chubby’s and Dalessandro’s on Henry Ave.

From there, you have the opportunists like Steve’s up in the Northeast and maybe even a return of Tony Luke’s, straight out of the King of Prussia Mall.

We should still expect a response from Angelo’s and Danny DiGiampietro.

We know right now that something was said and DiGiampietro himself is no stranger to the spotlight. And honestly, why wouldn’t he respond?

Not to add more fuel to the already lit fire but if Skinny Joey Merlino was actually spitting facts, then maybe DiGiampietro and Angelo’s are better off just glossing over this headline.

There could be a very real reason why there’s nothing but crickets down at Angelos and it has to do with Skinny Joey Merlino, locked and loaded, ready to expose them.

Over what? I have no idea. I still can’t fathom Skinny Joey Merlino saying something so bad that it wasn’t worth printing.

I will say, that Skinny Joey is always welcome to voice his thoughts, no matter what they may be, right here on The Liberty Line.

No questions asked. We’ll print whatever he’s thinking and not think twice about it.

If we’re lucky, maybe all of this will present the city of Philadelphia a cheesesteak that’s actually worth fighting over.
