The Phillies should get on the phone with the Pirates regarding Bryan Reynolds
Hello, Bryan Reynolds – The Phillies have some tough decisions coming over the next two months, and outfield upgrades need to be near the top of the list.
The bullpen shuffle is officially underway and it was long overdue. If this team is truly serious about winning a World Series this year, the front office simply cannot ignore the outfield any longer. It’s no secret that the current group isn’t getting it done.
Nick Castellanos is the only Phillies outfielder with a wRC+ over 100 (league average), and he’s barely there at 103. Behind him, you’ve got Max Kepler at 96, BRandon Marsh at 86, Joham Rojas at 80, and Weston Wilson doing whatever Weston Wilson does with a brutal 73.
Obviously, that’s not World Series-caliber production and no one on social media really liked my genius idea of trading for Mike Trout, so we’re now forced to look elsewhere to find a rebirth of the Phillies’ outfield.
Dave Dombrowski has treated outfield upgrades like a “nice to have,” patching with rentals or hoping for in-house solutions. That strategy is running out of rope.
According to Bob Nightengale, Bryan Reynolds could be on the trade market this summer and the Phillies should absolutely be picking up the phone.
Bryan Reynolds isn’t a rental. He’s locked up on a team-friendly eight-year, $106.75M deal through 2030 — just over $15.3M per season. That’s exactly the kind of move this team should be looking at — an impact bat with term, not another one-year Band-Aid.
Bryan Reynolds to Philly at the MLB Trade Deadline?
Yes, Reynolds is off to a slow start this year (.238/.307/.379, OPS+ below 100), but this is a guy with a career OPS+ of 121 and four straight seasons of 24+ homers. He’s driven in 80+ runs in three of those years.
You’d be betting on the track record, not a two-month slump. Plus, can anyone really rely on what happens at the dish when you’re playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates? I certainly cannot.
Compare that to Nick Castellanos — career OPS+ of 112, contract up after 2026 — and it’s clear Reynolds would be the natural long-term replacement while helping you win now.
Justin Crawford looks great, but he’s still developing. Relying on him to be the immediate savior is risky when the window to win is wide open right now. A Reynolds move gives you both present and future stability.
What would it take? Pittsburgh will want young talent, and the Phillies have plenty to offer — 15 of their top 30 prospects are still below Double-A so there’s definitely a deal to be made.
This is a move the Phillies need to seriously consider. You can’t waste Zack Wheeler’s prime. You can’t keep running out this outfield and hope for different results. You sure as hell can’t stand pat at the deadline and expect to slug your way through Queens or Los Angeles.
Dombrowski’s job is to go all in. Bryan Reynolds would be exactly that kind of move. Time to make some calls.
