Brewers complete sweep as Phillies limp into off-day with fourth straight loss

What a brutal way to close out the homestand. The Phillies dropped their fourth straight game on Sunday afternoon, falling 5-2 to the scorching Brewers, who rolled into Citizens Bank Park and completed their first sweep in Philly since 2015.

It was the kind of loss that leaves a sour taste heading into an off-day. The Phillies led early, had Ranger Suárez dealing, and still watched it all slip away in a sloppy seventh inning.

Jake Bauers delivered the knockout blow, ripping a pinch-hit, two-run double in the seventh after defensive miscues from the Phillies cracked the door wide open. It was part of a three-run inning that flipped the game for Milwaukee and sealed Philly’s second straight series sweep loss.

The Phillies actually got off to a great start. JT Realmuto and Kyle Schwarber each knocked in early runs to give Philly a 2-0 lead by the second inning. Suárez looked sharp again, giving up just one earned run over six innings.

But it all unraveled in the seventh. Weston Wilson misplayed Caleb Durbin’s liner into a leadoff double. More on Weston Wilson on the link below. He deserves his own article for how bad he is and why the Phillies should have already DFA’d him.

Otto Kemp keeps raking and Justin Crawford obliterates lefties so it’s about time for the Phillies to wake up on lineup decisions

Later, with two outs, William Contreras hit a ground ball to short that should’ve ended the inning — but Trea Turner booted it, allowing the tying run to score and keeping the inning alive. Two pitches later, Bauers ripped a double down the left-field line to put the Brewers on top.

Thank you, Trea Turner…smh

That was all Milwaukee needed. The Brewers’ bullpen shut the door the rest of the way, with Trevor Megill picking up his 11th save.

Jackson Chourio continued to torch the Phillies, posting another two-hit game with an RBI. He’s now had three straight multi-hit games against Philly this series.

Brewers-Phillies Game Notes

The seventh inning was the turning point. Turner’s error on what should’ve been the inning-ending play allowed Milwaukee to tie the game, and Bauers immediately cashed in with a two-run double. That sequence flipped the entire game.

This marked Milwaukee’s second straight three-game sweep — they swept Boston before coming to Philly. Before this current seven-game streak, the Brewers hadn’t swept a three-game series all season.

Up next for the Phillies

The Phillies get a much-needed breather Monday before opening a three-game series in Toronto on Tuesday. Zack Wheeler (6-2, 2.96 ERA) will be on the mound trying to stop the bleeding.

Injury Updates: Mick Abel is back in the Phillies’ rotation, Bryce Harper expects to play Tuesday

A week ago, this team was flying high with the best record in baseball. Now they have four straight losses, a cold offense, and some shaky defense. The off-day couldn’t have come at a better time. Let’s see if a trip north of the border can help the Phillies reset.
